Both Aghios Nikolaos and Elounder are both well worth a visit. Aghios Niko has plenty of restuarants with a great selection on the menu and at good prices and has plenty of tourist shops. Elounder had great resturants and loads of bars they also have a little train called Happy Train which takes you around the resort and to a neighbouring resort through a tiny little greek village well worth the 45min it takes. Both resorts are at set rates with the taxi's Elounda 11 euro and Aghios 7 euro.
Beaches on this side of the island seem to be shingle and not golden sand.
As first time visiters to crete we were very pleased with our choice and will deffernatley be going back to candia if not next year the deffo in the future.

Ag Nick is a lovely place, the harbour, port and marina are all worth seeing. There are plenty of shops and places to eat. We have been visiting here and the surrounding area for around 7 years. It isn't perfect, but every year it gets better. Places to eat - La Casa in town by the Lake for evening meals, Astoria at the harbour for snack and Cypryiana in Elounda is great just anytime.
The countryside around is lovely and the view are stunning
The best bit of all though are the people, the Cretan's are the friendliest and often most tolerant folks on earth...we love them and the place and are already booked to go back this October

We have been going to Aghios Nikolaos for the past 17 years and have always found it to be clean & friendly. There are plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from at reasonable prices. If you are in the town at night you can end the evening people watching as you sit by the lake. There is also a very good local bus service with air-conditioned coaches.

Lovely by the bottomless lake and so many resturants to choose from.
You have a choice of beaches, Almeria was our favorite as you could also go up to the river pool bar.

Probably what made up for the poor quality of our apartments was how good Ag Nik was. Good food, Mythos beer, beautiful town.
Was about 1/2 hour walk from our apartment. Nice evenings out with just enough life for thirtysomething couples but not the clubland of other areas.
Excellent part of Crete to stay in, Heraklion, water parks, little villages etc are all only about an hours drive away.

Aghios Nikolaos is a delightful town in a beautiful setting. It was much smaller than we anticipated with the only shopping being mainly jewellers. Some of the restaurants were very 'touristy'.We preferred the authentic restaurants in nearby Elounda for a taste of the real Greece.

The area around the apartments has a shop and a few taverna reasonably priced. We attended Agihos Nikolaos for my sons wedding. The centre was busy and their was plenty of choice for eating out, the resturants by the lake side are especially nice. It a child friendly place and all the tavernas are geared up for children. The weather on day rose to 44 degrees (very hot).

Aghios Nicholas is a fantastic resort.
Not for those who want to party non stop but ideal for anyone wanting a cosmopolitan resort with plenty of quality restaurants and bars/tavernas.
The further away from the lake you eat or drink the cheaper it gets 2 euro`s a pint up the hill.
Beautiful harbour area to eat and drink or to take boat trips to the many attractions.

The resort is clean and full of tavernas + shops.
The beaches are Blue flag and mainly sandy with lifeguards.
The following surrounding resorts are worth a visit, Elounda, Sitia, Lerapetra, Malia and Plaka (however you will need a car to visit most of them).
Water city is definately worth a visit (entance is 16 euros, open 10.00am to 6.00pm), approx 30 miles from the resort.

Agios Nicholas is a delightful resort with something for everyone. The harbour area is most attractive full of restaraunts bars and taverners.
Couple of disco's or so we were told but we couldn't hear them. bars tend to be a bit price'y close to the harbour but if you venture a little further up the hill you can find beer at 2-3 euro's a pint.
Lake area past the harbour is nice to sit and people watch with bars all the way round but again at a price. Shopping is very good in this area all the usual tat but lots of locally made goods of high quality especially the paintings.
All in all very enjoyable resort possibly a bit too quiet for the younger ones but ideal for couples/families.
