Beaches

Achladies has everything you need, with the sea taxi to take you into town in the evening avoiding the busy buses into town. The beach is a blue flag beach, clean and great for swimming at any time of the day. You can rent a couple of sunbeds and parasol for €8 or just sit at the end of the beach where the rocks act as natural shade. The local supermarkets are very competitive on prices all with fresh bread daily and tons of good quality fruit and veg.

The Yalis studios provide an ideal solution for a last minute, cheap holiday, however there are a few things you may like to consider before booking… The rooms are beyond basic. They are self-catering, however trying to cook without even basic equipment like a sharp knife, cheese grater and chopping board isn’t ideal. There is no air-con, which if you are planning to visit in summer (I went in Aug ’08) becomes unbearable – there is not even a ceiling fan to ease the temperature and don’t try opening the doors unless you want to be eaten by mosquitoes…
The room was clean-ish, and the maid will come in once a day to mop the floors. None of the showers are fixed to the wall so it’s an ‘interesting’ experience trying to wash your hair! In addition, unless you live in a big city you may struggle to get used to the traffic noise – the rooms at the front of the property are right by the (very busy) road and even being a Londoner, I found the noise getting a bit much at times. If your room is at the back of the property then you may struggle with the noise from the bar, as people seemed to stay up until the early hours of the morning, music still blaring…
The pool/bar area is nice, although there is a dog which steals your flip flops and poos everywhere (not cleaned up by the owners) which is rather rank, so if you don’t like dogs, don’t go to this resort! The pool also got gradually more and more dirty over the week I was there, and by the end of the week it was murky green, scummy and resembled a dirty pond more than a pool. The owner Nikos kept demanding that it was safe, but obviously needs a good clean. The studios are in a great location though – the beach is 2 minutes down the road with a few decent bars and taverna’s and the water taxi will take you over to the town or you can jump on the bus outside the studios to get around the island.
All in all, this was a so-so holiday – not blissfully quiet and peaceful, but a fair place to go for a last minute tan.

This is a public beach, so the sunbeds are charged at 8 euro's for 2 sunbeds and a parasol.
There is a water taxi to take you to Skiathos town. There are a few watersports on the beach.
The beach was clean.

The beaches in Skiathos are gorjus and there are so many to choose from. It was relaxing to lay on the sandy beach and swimming in the clear water. You can even see the fish! There is no entertainment at the bar except Greek night on a thursday where they have barbequ. However the staff are so friendly its is ideal for a few drinks after being out to the local tavernas or skiathos town.

Achladies is a small laid back resort with steep hills on each side. There are about half a dozen resturants. The beach is the usual narrow strip with loads of sunbeds. We were there the first week of october so most of the watersports had finished infact there were alot of business's closing before the season had ended and I don't think they are doing themselves any favours for following years! There is a water taxi into Skiathos town which is a really nice way to travel ( and cheap) but that finished on our second night. The local bus service is very good but can be very crowded at certain times of the day.

I was there on the last week of the season, so things were winding down a bit, there were a few tavernas but they were closed for the end of the season. In high season getting on the bus may be difficult, you may consider walking down the hill to the beach at vasillas or down to bus stop 10 and walking down the side of the Esperides hotel to the beach for the water taxi into town.
I would have no hesitation returning here again.

Excellent resort very clean and friendly, a very quiet place so if your looking for an action packed holiday this is not the place for you.
No childrens clubs and very little evening entertainment, but if you need an away from it all holiday, this is heaven.

The beach here is nothing like it is described in the brochures except that it is sand if you can see it for sun loungers.
Sun loungers cost 8 euro for 2 with a parasol which is very expensive if worked out over the 14 days we were there.
The beach is clean with coarse sand & it shelves quite steeply into the sea 3 steps & you have gone from ankle depth to chest depth with the shelf making it very difficult to get out.
The sea is very cold & gets the wash from the boats. Most days there is a breeze sometimes more than that as the weather comes down from northern Greece.
It is a lovely peaceful bay with just a few low key water sports at the far end but not an annoying noise.
There is no way to play sport on the beach not even bat & ball which we found very disappointing.
The brochures do not tell you that the island is so hilly & the road so dangerous that you risk life & limb just going to the supermarket!
At the end of the drive for the Esperides Hotel there is a wonderful bakers & the macaroons are to die for, at just 1.5 euro each they are a meal in themselves.
In the evening there is nowhere to walk but to the tavernas on the beach or take the water taxi into Skiathos Town, you really wouldn't want to do this every night in spite of Skiathos Town coming alive at night.
The buses are frequent but pack you in like sardines & you will probably have to stand all the way to your destination.
The taxis will stop anywhere on the road but be warned you may not have it to yourself as he will pick up as many passengers as a possible. Another warning is that from Achladies Bay to Skiathos Town the taxi fare is 5 euro but if you have to share the taxi he will then charge you ALL that fare so he makes a packet but it is against the law.
We have been to other Islands in Greece but this is by far the most expensive.
Don't book your trips though your holiday rep unless you want to pay through the nose just take the water taxi into Skiathos & book it there. A trip to the marine park is a wonderful day out & will cost you 56 euro each from the reps but booking it direct in Skiathos will be just 50 euro for 2 on the Kassandra a beautiful boat with lunch thrown in!
We traveled with Libra Holidays & for all the trips you had to travel into Skiathos town under you own steam before the trip began so it had already cost you 3 euro each return.
Coming from the Esperides Hotel onto the beach & turning left you will see a little alley way going up to the Achladies Apartments this is where you will find a very peaceful garden which also happens to a turtle sanctuary, it is a truly magical place run by Thomas the chair mans mother. She is lovely lady who will chat to you & tell you about the turtles.
The taverna next to the alley does wonderful food at very reasonable prices, they also have a traditional Greek night on a Thursday which is well worth a visit with dancers from Athens & great atmosphere.
The islands of Tsougria opposite the hotel can be visited but there are just a couple of beaches, only one with a taverna & a few chairs, the toilet here is just a hole in the ground but if you still want to visit the water sports man at the end of the beach will take you for a price ( he quoted us a whopping 50 euro return ) a price he makes up in his mind while studying you, we guessed he was trying to work out how much we could afford, you can get a boat from Skiathos over but we decided not to.

Archladies is very low key with about half a dozen tavernas, several of which are situated directly on the beach. It's a wonderful place to get away from it all.
Skiathos town is easily accessible via taxi, bus or water taxi.
