We've just arrived back (5th Sept) from another wonderful holiday spent at the Gilleiru. I agree that the ratings are all over the place and the hotel certainly wouldn't qualify for a 4* in the UK - but I think that applies to pretty much all hotel ratings in Malta (the Palm Court qualifies for a 3* ). But this hotel is so well situated and the staff so pleasant that it more than makes up for it.
On the downside the breakfast is not especially exciting (continental, but you can pay extra for a cooked brekkie), and the bar is pretty lifeless. The evening meals are basic but generally well cooked and tasty.
It tends to be more of an 'adult' hotel, with few children - but that suits us down to the ground. Around 70% of its customers are return visitors (and that 70% includes us) which I think says a lot. I would recommend paying the supplement and getting a sea-view room - definitely worth it simply for sitting on the balcony, sipping a drink and taking in the wonderful view. We're already planning our holiday there for next year - I wouldn't think about staying anywhere else.

Just spent a week in the Gillieru Harbour Hotel. Nice place, but I would not rate it 4*!
Can anyone tell me what they base the *'s on??
Pos:
- really friendly staff
- perfect location: quiet and not too many tourists around, but restaurants and fun only just around the corner in Buggiba (nice walk on the promenade, where the locals gather)
- lovely view on harbour/sea
Neg:
- very very basic room and bathroom
- very thin, even torn sheets/pillow cases
- worn, grey, stained towels
- little annoyances: tiles broken, balcony door not sliding properly
- pool was very warm, felt more like a hot tub!
Overall not a bad place, but we expected much more of a 4* hotel. More a 3* to me.

I did not stay at the hotel, but 3 mins up the road in the Howard Johnson (which was a 4* worthy of it's rating). I did come down for a meal, but was not happy with the service.
Usually I take it or leave it with meals, but this one cost

Highly recommended!! Spent a week here Easter 2002. Loved the hotel...low-key but very well managed & the staff could not have been more pleasant & helpful. Fabulous location with a balcony overlooking the bay & the pool. We just stayed B&B as we like to eat somewhere different every night, and restautants in ST. Pauls were excellent. Had a fabulous week in Malta.....absolutely loved the island & Gozo, even tho weather was just OK. Loads to see & do, although I realise it's one of those places you either love or hate. This island has real character....go before they take away those crazy buses!!
