5th ave in Playa Del Carmen is where all the shops and many bars and restaurants are, very busy at times. Beach is superb with plenty of beach bars.

The beach is nice, but be aware that the under current is very strong and you will drift, watch children extra carefully.
People are lovely, no greif shopping say no and they accept it. We ladies went shopping and for a beer on our own and felt comfortable

Riviera Maya is a family resort; lots of clean beaches and plenty of bars/restaurants. Shops galore in Playa del Carmen but beware the timeshare sharks. They always manage to catch us out!!!

playa del carmen is a gorgeous resort, a real mixture of colourful shops, bars and restraunts, then off all the avenues is some real mexican eateries.
The beach is lovely, though a little crowded for me.
Its great to haggle the shop owners, they are so friendly.
Taxi's are really cheap too.

Playacar: Small set of shops and bits, bit expensive but handy for bits and pieces. The beach, much improved on 18 months ago. The "Whales" are still there but not nearly as dominating as they were. A nice 10 min stroll takes you away from the hotels and up to a quieter bit of beach.
A short walk takes you to..
Playa Del Carmen: Bigger and brasher and based along 5th Avenue with plenty of shops bars and restaurants to choose from. Still get a fair bit of pestering from the shop keepers but nothing bad.

Once your out of the hotel you walk along what seems to be a residential street, with lovely looking houses down each side. It is a gated area therefore you do not have to worry about security etc.
Along the road is some little shops selling jewellery and gifts etc but further on you will come to a shopping mall called fifth avenue. There is an wide range of shops from designer to tacky, staff will ask you to go into their restaurants but once you say no that seems to be suffice.
The beach is lovely and clean and the sun beds are in good condition.
Would I visit this resort again? YES without a doubt.

We stayed at the Iberostar Quetzal in Playacar .The resort area consists of large high standard hotels with a few shops, bank etc.The large resort of Playa Del Carmen is a $5 taxi ride away. The resort itself is very safe with security at each hotel and the main road and pedestrian pavement is very clean and litter free. Each hotel sits on the beach ( other than a few on the opposite side of the road)The beaches took a battering from a hurricane a few years ago and to preserve the beaches sandbags have been placed along the surf line. These are not the type of sandbags used in WW2 but huge bags that look like partly submerged whales.Don't be put off as they add rather than detract to the beach areas. The kids love them as they jump off them into the surf or let the waves wash them over the top and down the other side. They also form calmer lagoons behind them which are good for younger children.
The resort is generally well placed for trips out as the ferries leave for Cozumel from Plya Del Carmen. Some of the Mayan sites are nearby and so are the Eco Parks.
Well worth a visit.

The resort spotless always somebody cleaning and collecting glasses etc. Entertainment really good around beach and pool every day. The beach was lovely white sand, although a bit rocky in parts of water, wear beach shoes to protect feet. The water was crystal clear. We had food cooked on beach which was excellant, with bar nearby for drinks. We would definately return here in the future.
