Mexico is not as poor as some of the Carribean i.e The Dom Rep and so you don't really see the poverty as much. Playa del Carmen is a buzzing place which is about 25 mins away on the courtesy bus. It is well worth a visit. We found a fantastic vegetarian restaurant and had a lovely meal and drinks for about £20.
If I were with a partner and wanted a quiet but luxurious holiday, I would certainly go to the El Dorado, however, my son is at the age where he wants the daytime entertainment and he would have been bored after a week let alone two, but for couples I would say go for it!!

The hotel we stayed in was just outside the resort of Playa del carmen.
We found this resort to be very clean(even the toilets are all clean) and with a good selection of local type shops and a lovely beach.
There is easy access to the ferry which takes you over to Cozumel and a bus station where you can get a bus to just about anywhere. There is even a Mc.Donalds
There are loads of gift shops and stalls and nice restaurants.
We visited Cozumel and Cancun and thought Playa nicer, although a lot quieter.
Most shops sell the same sort of thing and some of the vendors and shopkeepers are a bit pushy but not as bad as some I've been to.
The beaches are all public so you can walk the length of the beach if you want to.
It is also not as cheap as you might think it would be. Of course you barter but prices are not very much different from the U.K.
I would visit this resort again but prefer to stay just outside where it is quieter.
