The resort needs a bit of attention but it seems to be getting it as money is being invested in the area and new roads being built. Entertainment is for the more mature no light pollution or discos. Harbour and its many restaurants do some very tasty and good value Cypriot dishes with friendly staff.

The area was good.
Restaurants, and bars are available by walk, also it's safe and quiet.

At the Moment (October 2004) the road surface of the main street in Kyrenia ist paved with brand new bricks. So there is some dirt and noise there.
But I think the work will finish the job before winter ends and Kyrenia/Girne will be much more nicer than before.
A brand new Hotel in the center looks very attractive - the name ist "The Colony", with international 5* Standards.
Excellent Beaches you can fint aprox. 15 km east of Kyrenia.

Kyrenia is totally different from Southern Cyprus.
Far less commercialised with genuinely friendly people & much better value for money, but it is quieter with no disco's but some great places to eat out.

Kyrenia very nice, quite expensive to eat out around the harbour, border is one of the best places to buy your designer clothes from very cheap and the shop across the road the best for the Turkish delight. All in all a hectic place full of charm but very safe with friendly people and a great place to fit into the local lifestyle.

Still nice and unspoilt and visitors made very welcome, but visit soon as many hundreds of new houses are under construction. The coast on the panhandle to the east is totally unspoilt with little signs of any development or tourism.

We are very familiar with Kyrenia and its environs, but this was the first time we had actually stayed in Kyrenia town.
In October 2004 it seemed as if most of the town main streets were being revamped, drains were being laid and footpaths were being replaced. The chaos will pay off in 2005. we hope.
Kyrenia is now much busier with more traffic in streets that were not designed for it. The building boom is very evident, with cement mixers and builders lorries around from early moring until very late at night.
It certainly is not the unspoilt haven that it was when we first visited. Having said all that, the people are still their usual charming selves, ever willing to do their best for you, and once out of Kyrenia town there are some lovely quiet natural beaches, and plenty to see and places explore.if you want to see the Karpas go soon before the developers arrive.
A hire car is essential if you want to get the best out of a holiday in Northern Cyprus. Food is excellent. and very reasonable if you eat in the small local restaurants, and there are many to choose from. Supermarkets are reasonable, and the produce is very good.

Kyrenia a lovely town with bustling but quaint harbour. You can take boat trips for the day from here or just sit in one of the bars and cafe's soaking up the sun. The castle is interesting and big enough to keep you occupied for a few hours - although beware that closing time is indicated by bells being rung. Don't get locked in like we did! Also beware that not all walls have robust handrails. Bellapais (can't remember how it's spelt!)is also a lovely place to visit and is only a short bus/taxi ride away in the hills. There's a few nice places to eat at night, including within the abbeys walls. Great for a special night out.

Kyrenia is a very dirty and poor town full of beggers and con men, watch your bag.
They also overcharge people from Britain.

I must admit that the first time we went to Kyrenia, which was 2003, it was a bit of shock, apart from the restaurants, the rest of island did not seem to be quite ready for tourists, which for some people may be a good thing. However we went back in 2004 and things are improving, however this did mean that a few improvements were taking place, but this did not spoil our holiday.
Kyrenia centre has a lovely harbour area and has some nice restaurants to choose from, although you do sometimes get hasseled, but just tell them you have either already eaten or you have somewhere booked. There are also some nice restaurants away from the harbour which are worth trying.
Bellapais Abbey is well worth a visit in the daytime to see the Abbey and in the evening for meal, try the Kybele, the views are superb. Buffavento castle is worth seeing, this is the castle Walt Disney based his Sleeping Beauty castle on, although be warned there are a lot of steps to be climbed to reach the top. Kyrenia castle is also worth a visit. A trip to Nicosia is a real eye opener and a must. A couple of trips further afield are worth doing, one is Famagusta and the other is the Karpas Penninsular.
I cannot comment personally on the beaches in the resort area as we are not really beach people but I have been told that Escape beach is worth a visit.
Overall we love Kyrenia and will keep returning and hope it doesn't become too commercialised.
