Praia do Vau is a small resort between Alvor and Praia da Rocha there is a few beachfront bars and 2 or 3 restaurants.

A bus runs from Vau into Rocha and Portimao but taxis are very reasonable to get to Rocha or Alvor for a night out. There is a small shop on the Jardim do Vau complex for daily needs and a large supermarket in Portimao (Continente) for a large buy in with taxis outside the door if you have'nt got a car.

The most wonderful thing about Praia do Vau is the beach which if the tide is out you can walk on right to Portimao Marina.

Praia da Rocha was the nearest resort.

Likes:-
Fantastic golden sandy beaches that stretch for miles. Lots of bars & restaurants to choose from.
Plenty of entertainment.
Lots of shops.
Excellent walk along the beautiful coastline to Praia da Vau and Alvor.

Dislikes:-
African touts trying to sell you jewellry, bags, sunglasses, etc.
Busy tourist resort so can be expensive, especially the couvert (bread, olives, cheese, etc). Do watch out for this!
Food better in other resorts, especially Alvor, which is a much more traditionally portugese resort.

Praia De Vau is a little off the beaten track and a little spearse when it comes to entertainment. The beach is small but well kept & clean.
Approx 2/3 kilometers away one way is Praia De Rocha with plenty to do, and 3/4 kms the other way is Alvor which is a bustling resort.

We would definitely go back to the Algarve but due to location not this hotel.

We had the resorts of Alvor which is very hilly in the centre where the shops are but nice to shop in and nice coffee shops and bars and nice to walk along the front. We also had Potimao with its lots of shoe shops also nice to walk around.

We had a courtesy but that ran from our hotel to the nearest resort centres which was good but the taxis are fairly cheap as well. Be warned though about the state of the pavements.

They are not the least bit concerned with raised flags or pot holes that you could break your neck on. We found they just filled them in with sand!

As we visited on 2-9 Jan '06, we probably got a completely different view of this small resort than during high season.

Restaurants here ranged from beach front sardine shacks to rather suspect '70's dining rooms serving plastic pizza. Would recommend only a couple of fish restaurants (Serol in particular but not on a Monday as the fishermen have Sundays off) and the two Indian (Raj at Hotel Garbe and Bollywood nights or somesuch). Clipper was recommended by other websites, but closed in January.

The resort was lovely near the fisherman's beach and main 'prom' in the older part of town with a beautiful view and full sun. The main road towards the Vila Gale Nautico hotel is very ugly - full of high rise apartment blocks with closed shutters. The roads were very quiet and there were very few people around, as it was just after the new year. Imagine it would be a different place in high season.

The beach is fantastic with panoramic views over the sea and clean sand full of shells. Great for kids and quieter than Albufeira etc.

Good location if you have a hire car (35-45 mins approx slow drive from Faro along A22 main road). Not Portimao actually - nearer to Albufeira and Carvoiero.

Resort was very quiet - nothing within walking distance of the hotel but only 4 euros to get to Alvor or Praia Da Roche which were both notice resorts

Beautiful place, spotlessly clean with very friendly people.
Good bars - visit Classics Bar which had great music from 50' to present. Soul, jazz, rythym and blues, rock n roll. You name it they played it here. With the friendliest bar staff ever!!!
We also went to the casino for a meal and cabaret - booked through our rep which was fabulous. 4 courses with water, wine, a live band during the meal and a show afterwards. 5 star service all for just 27 euros each - bargain, if you come here on holiday this is a must.
Visit restaurant Titanic for a good meal in a cosy atmosphere - again a must.
Praia de Rocha is great with a beautifully clean beach, which never seemed to be too busy. Great for kids.

The beach at Praia Da Rocha is excellent with a couple of miles of golden sand. There are lots of pubs and restaurants mostly providing the same types of food but reasonably priced. Try Alacarte for food and the Classics bar for drinks. Classics is small enough to be cosy whilst playing classic songs. Look out for the Blues Brothers standing outside! There are some street sellers selling hash, cigerettes, fake watches etc but they will leave you alone if you say your not interested. It would probably be a lot busier later in the season but I would recommend early or late season as you get the fab weather without the crowds.
