The Hotel is one of the oldest in Funchal, however that does not detract from the excellent service and value for money that you get by staying here.
The biggest and only drawback are the nuisance caused by one particular and in other cases occasional barking of dogs left out in the gardens in the houses at the rear of the hotel, in private houses. There does not seem that anyone is doing anything about it (their laws do not seem to have the same weight and protection as ours for such nuisances). Be warned one particular dog barks every night and on one occasion from 0330 to 0500.
This is no joke - you have been warned. It has been going on for a longtime so the hotel staff tells us!!

The hotel is well established.
Our room, on the 7th floor, was spacious and kept spotlessly clean by the staff.
Would not suggest anyone who has any problem walking goes to the hotel as there a number of steps to negotiate from the dining room to reception where the lifts are.

The Hotel Raga is in need of total updating.
Our room was on 11th floor facing north. Above our room was some kind of generator that made a grinding sound all night. We complained but nothing was done about it. Add to this the wind that blew through the badly fitting patio doors even with both sets of curtains drawn. This caused the badly fitted door at the other end of the room to rattle all night even when double locked, and of course there was absolutely no sound protection from the local dogs that barked all night.
Our room had a constant musty smell about it. The cleaners did there best by leaving the patio doors open all day but as soon as they were closed it came back. The bathroom very obviously dated from the 1960's. The tiles were a shade of sea green that I remember was popular at the time - at least with some people! There was no air-conditioning or heating and we could definitely have done with some heating!
The breakfasts never varied and I felt the food was of the lowest quality. One night we decided to have dinner at the hotel and we soon wished we hadn't bothered. The main course was about the size of a starter and we had 2 slices of potato each - not even a whole potato between us!
We were appalled by the worn out state of the chairs in the bar area. One night the leg fell off the chair that my husband was sitting on. (He is 13 stone and tea total so there was no question of any wrong doing on his part.) The bar man was passing at the time but he just laughed and made no attempt to apologise of obtain another chair for my husband.

"Well established" describes the Raga - not new, but certainly not shabby/ and the service was really friendly and top class. From the excellent rooms, lifts descend to the reception level. Superb staff - nothing is too much trouble.
Down a flight of stairs (no more lifts unfortunately) and you reach dining room level and cocktail bar (not open when we were there because weather was too hot!). Down a further flight to the pool, pool-side bar (very pleasant day and evening), and snack bar (super food - good prices). Just a few steps and a gentle slope takes you onto the front road, sea-front and out and about on the level.
Madeira was a memorable holiday, helped enormously by the superb welcome extended to us by the Raga - from the Boss to the brassware polisher
