The apartments were very basic although well equipt for a self catering holiday.Cockroaches were a bit of a problem.Just try not to use your downstairs toilet that is where they seemed to get in.Very hilly no good for elderly at all or anyone with small children.Over all had quite a good holiday.Get a safety deposit box although we had no problems with a break in.

If you have small children or walking difficulties don't go here! There is a very lot of steps from the bottom floor of the monaco apts to reception at the top...I would advise you to hire a fan when you arive otherwise you will have difficulty sleeping,If you are unlucky enough to see any cockroaches in your apartment you can go up to reception and they will be more than haopy to give you a spray to kill the cockroaches!!!I would also advise you to hire a safety box as i have heard of apartments being broken in to and money etc. being stolen...
The monaco does not have any entertainment but there is lots at the puerto rico centre...

Having read some of last years reviews on this site before heading off to the Monaco Apartments, I was quite apprehensive about our stay.
When we arrived we must have woken every one else in the complex as we banged our four suitcases down what felt like a million stairs, as our bus didn't leave us off until 2am I'm sure we weren't the most popular people...but as all complexes appeared to be of this nature in Puerto Rico there may be no getting away from this.
I was quite pleased with the apartments, they are in need of a decorative facelift but were clean and spacious, the pool area was pleasant and the shop was well stocked. My only gripe about the apartments was the security- the front door had an excellent lock which required someone to stay sober each night so we could actually get back in, but some of the windows had only one lock left were there were clearly supposed to be two. The reception area has safety deposit boxes and I would make sure you rent one as soon as you arrive. The receptionists there are extremely friendly and always willing to help (even carrying suitcases upstairs in some instances).
The rooms were cleaned every day but the bed-clothing wasn't changed at all in the seven days we were there.
The Monaco is about half way up the hillside so not too far to climb uphill after a night dancing but the noise from the shopping centre can go on until about 3am, fortunately it isn't loud enough to
stop you sleeping.
I would definately stay in the Monaco again, more due to the friendly staff and location than the rooms.

We booked the holiday only 6 weeks before departure and as this apartment was the only one available we were a bit dubious. However apart from the thousands of steps to each apartment(which wasn't mentioned in the brochure) we eventually reached our room. It was extremely spacious and as i am very particular about cleanliness the smell of bleach reached my nose as soon as i opened the door! The whole apartment was spotless. Although in the brochure they mentioned that it had been recently refurbished it was still a bit dated but at least the shower curtain didn't have milldew on it and neither did the tiles. We used the pool once as it was too cold, we didn't eat there but hired a car and saw quite a bit of the island. i would definitely go back and although it has been mentioned before we always hire a safety deposit box which i think is a must. Our lock on the door had been put on upside down but we didn't have any problems with it or any other side of security. we didn't have any cockroaches in the apartment but when we came back in an evening there were plenty on the paths! The worse part for me was that Puerto Rico centre partied until about 3.30 a.m. and it kept me awake. As we weren't going to work the next day i didn't find it too much of a problem.

* MAKE SURE YOU READ THE WARNING AT THE END.
I stayed at the Monaco Apartments for 2 weeks in July/August. These comments are based on the experiences of our party of 10 adults and 2 children using 3 apartments.
The apartments are on 6 levels, the reception being on the top level (6), and the swimming pool on level 4. When the complex was new, (and I would guess at that being in the early 80's) it would have been very nice, but now, everything looks very tired. Walls to apartments and gardens have render and paint missing everywhere, as does most of Puerto Rico, and windows and doors badly need varnishing. General maintenance is long overdue. The illuminated sign on the reception roof that only read "MON", just about summed it up.
The apartments very spacious, having a large lounge and a kitchen area separated by a large breakfast bar. A downstairs shower/toilet/washroom, (but none of our 3 apartments had a shower curtain downstairs), and an outside rear yard, handy for drying beach towels and storing lilo's etc. and well equipped. Upstairs, another bathroom, and 2 double bedrooms. The largest bedroom having a nice little balcony, with a lovely view. They are well equiped with fridge, money in the slot tv, large fan, and set of garden furniture.
The cleanliness of the apartments was spot on, and remained that way with regular visits from the cleaners. 2 of our 3 apartments had the odd visit from "Mr Cockroach" but not my apartment. We had a few ants, but the receptionist is only too happy to give you a large can if insect spray. And that was the end of the ants.
There is a handy little mini-market on the 6th level, underneath the reception. It is a little more expensive than the larger supermarkets, but its better than going down all those steps for 5L of water and a loaf.
There is no safe's in the apartments. They're in the reception, (which is closed at the most inappropriate times) and to be honest, anything that would fit through your home letter box will fit in the safe. So where do you put your camera, video camera, binoculars etc.
Which brings me to my last and most important point. ***The security of the apartments is absolutely terrible. Windows can easily broken and opened. The apartments are regularly broken into and robbed as was one of ours, in the middle of the afternoon, while we were in the pool. Items of both value and sentiment were taken, causing worry and distress to us all for the whole of our second week.
The only deterrent is the dead lock on front door. Make sure you turn the key 2 full turns, not just when you go out, but when you go to bed too. Check that the cleaner has locked the door properly too.***
P.S. If you book a private taxi for your airport transfers, don't pay for the return trip until you've had it, as they didn't turn up for one of our party and they had to pay again.
P.P.S. I enjoyed my holiday very much and would definitely go back to the Monaco Apartments. If you go, make sure you are insured for theft of you personnal possessions.

Monaco apts
We have stayed at these apts twice. Both times we have had to have window locks repaired. No security that we could see.The apts were in need of attention but were kept clean. Ideal for families lovely pool area. The steps were a killer. Everywhere you wanted to go you had to climb loads of steps. Reception , pool area, mini market everywhere. There is no lift. Short walk to the main centre across a busy corner road were the taxis think they are in a race. Down more steps which are very uneven and dark but not to bad .
O yes and the cats. The ppl before us must have had them in the apt because everytime we opened the door 3 shot upstairs and lay on the beds or jumped up on to the kitchen surface crying for food. One even had his own patio chair. So we spent the week shooing them out.( Our daughter is allergic to cats) .Handy for the bus and a telephone on the dreaded corner. Can enter the apts from the bottom through a gate on that corner but this was sometimes locked if you came in late and had to find another one further along. Always found one open never had to walk to the top thank goodness. Not to bad at all we have stayed at a few apts in the area and these are no worse than any other just wish they had a lift.

These apartments are two floor condo type apartments with a terrance and balcony. They are very basic, but seem to have everything you need for a self-catering holiday. There is even a fan .
