Most of the hotels in Mahdia are situated in the Zone Touris which is about 2.5 miles from the town itself.
There are a handful of shops (including a mini market), a couple of cafes, a bank and ATM, and public phones that are cheaper than those in the hotels.
To get to Mahdia / Monastir (including directly to the airport)or Sousse- the train is very cheap (less than 2 dinas - £1 to get to Monastir) and the service is hourly. The station is just a few hundred yard across flat rough open ground from the gates of the Vincci Nour Palace Hotel. The timetable is posted on the station wall and easy to read. Tickets are cheaper if bought before you board and you can up grade to first class for 50p - trains are a bit 1960's but comfortable enough.
Alternative is to take a taxi that hang about outside hotel gates but do haggle for a good price. There are also horse drawn carriages into Mahdia town centre.
Beware of free trips into Mahdia from your hotel - whilst these are free they usually end up with you being taken to a carpet shop and subject to pressure selling techniques !
Market day is Friday but it is very busy and we found it intimidating.
The beach is clean along the front of the hotels but you do get pestered by hawkers and people selling quad bike rides, horse riding and camel rides.
Some hotels charge for use of sun beds on the beach, whilst others do not.

The area is surrounded by scrubland, and it is obvious that Tunisia is a very poor country - bearing this in mind, the Zone Touristic is fairly clean. Outside of the hotels and organised excursions, there is no entertainment whatsoever. The tours are fairly extensive, and good fun, but there are no bars, and very few restaurants to visit. The beaches are fine, but fairly busy with a long stretch of beach with multiple hotels along it.
