My husband and I (56 years old) are about to try Spain for the first time since we were young! We have spent most of our recent holidays in the USA - it's time for a change.
We are looking for a quiet resort from which we can visit Barcelona. We chose Barcelona as an interesting city for one weeks "try out" of our Spanish adventure.
I guess our dream stay would be a quiet, clean hotel within walking distance of a town (shops/restaurants etc.). We don't need "lively" bars or children's theme parks.
Although we want value for money, we aren't necessarily looking for the cheapest options.
1. Are we on the right lines to base ourselves around Barcelona?
2. Sitges seems a possibilty - is this OK, or are there better places?
3. Are we better to fly (from Manchester) to Barcelona or Reus?
Any help much appreciated,
Lynda
Your choice of Barcelona is spot on a wonderful city.
We only visit Barcelona when staying in Salou on a very cheapie, Reus is a long way from Barcelona and if you want to be based around the city I would suggest that you fly into Barcelona and look on one of the accomodation providers ie Wintersunshine Holidays. If you decide on Sitges then to fly to Girona where you can get very good value flights fron the UK could be a consideration.
Good luck I hope that you get sorted.
Not commerialised (I dont want to sound snobbish but "upmarket" would be a good description )- very handy for Barcelona
Popular with both the residents of Barcelona and I believe the gay community in general (but without being as obvious as in some resorts - or not that I noticed )
Easy Jet do quite reasonable flight from Luton to Barcelona, or Ryan Air from Stansted or Luton to Reus is a possibility. You'd need a car if flying into Reus I reckon. You could use the train to get from Barcelona to Sitges (or get a cab).
Sitges is a great resort, quite upmarket and it does have a lively gay scene. You never know you might quite like clubbing until 7am! It has the benefit of a station with regular connections into Barcelona with a journey time of about 45 minutes if memory serves.
A good choice. If you wanted to be a bit further away Cambrils would be good, a more relaxed seaside town with a station, though an hour and a half on the train from Barcelona.
Salou is always a possibility. You could get a very good package deal and use the train to get to Barcelona (1hr20mins) from there - tickets 9 euros return.
Hope this is useful
Totally confused Richie you are right ,I don't have clue perhaps I was thinking about Loret. Cambrils is a great place particularly out of season but a bit of a drag to Barcelona more than once during a short break. Sitges seems the ideal place is it just 20 miles (35K) from Barca ?.
Again, to the north of Barcelona are some good resorts. Blanes is quite Spanish if you know what I mean, Callela and Santa Susanna are both nice seaside resorts and all three have stations to get to Barcelona - so if some bargain flights to Girona were to be found, then these resorts are an option
