I know it has been done to death, but what do you do ? For the new members , when you get tthrough customs etc. at the Airport your cases are usually dragged off the belts by the baggage boys then placed to one side, nightmare if you didn`t know about this as you are looking for your bags when they are already off then you have to go through the rigmorole of fighting for your bags once you have found them. The reason they are so quick is so that they can carry your bag to the coach and expect a £1 coin for a tip.
Now back to the original point behind the post, do you give them £1 bearing in mind that they do about 15-20 of these a day or do you, if able, carry your own ? or how do you get around this problem ?
I personally carry my own but it really pains me to see these greedy little urchins taking pound coins left right and centre when in my mind I know that the people who work on the roads and in other various tourist jobs would be lucky to get what these guys get in a week let alone a day Problem is you have just arrived have no rupees (unless your a regular) and you can`t really not give anything for their services, so you are compelled to pay them at least £1 which is far too much.
I don`t really have any answers to this dilemma and was wondering what everyone else does that would be a better option
i feel we get bullied into giving them the money whether we want to or not, we had a bit of a tiff with a guy last year when we were getting in the taxi he wanted £2 from us and we had carried one of the cases ourselves!! i politely told him where to go ( well as politely as possible after a 10 hour Monarch flight!) this year i shall hang onto our cases and the money.... and spend it on my first honey bee !!
Just keep saying no and be determined, they soon get the message and go after someone else.
Spottiswoode
Pepper spray!!!! Only joking!
I give them nothing at the airport and I am not polite about it, the second word is usually off.
Then I over tip the room boy who has carried my cases up the stairs shown me the workings of the shower etc and tells me just to hola if I need anything. Will run an errand, example I drink 4 litres of water/day @ R20/bottle give him a R100 he gets to keep the change.
I know its his job, I know he gets paid buttons, but most of all I feel good over tipping the room boy knowing I'm making his life just that little better.

If you are going to Bali make sure you have small denominations of local currency as you will get hijacked by airport porters whether you want them or not! We managed to say no to them up until we were at the desk for taxis. As you come out of arrivals you turn to the left and find the taxi desk. These give set prices for journeys. You pay at the desk and the driver takes you to the car. As you are paying, the porters manage to grab your trolley and "guide" you to your taxi! And of course, where one person happily managed to control the trolley beforehand, it now takes 3 porters!! All part of the experience.
By the way, they were NOT happy with what we gave them!
@ Johnny , Lez that`s fair play mate, they work a damn sight harder than the lads at the Airport
6 years ago.
lets see them try and pry our £1 from us this time!! haha
I keep firm hold of our trolley and keep saying I'm fine I'm fine. We did give a couple of young lads the breakfast packs from the flight which hadn't been opened last year.
We've only been to Goa once (in Jan) and we were advised that a few pence was enough for a tip. I was disgusted by the way our 'handler' demanded money for literally 'helping' me push the trolley for 10 yards, and whined when it wasnt a pound coin. My other half ended up forking out £1.50 just to shut him up. On the way back, no-one got near our cases - I think my face said it all!!! We're off out in Nov and I'm determined not to hand out cash like that again. As others said, I'd rather give my tips to well deserving people. I sometimes think that peope forget that we save for our hols and spending money - if I tipped everyone £1 I'd soon be penniless myself
The lads dont get that much of the money, after they have paid off,the gang leaders, airport security police.I dont give anymore, its making the wrong people wealthy.
if they dont ger that much they can always get a job as a roomboy and keep all their wages.
I am NOT going to give them a penny, ( or a rupee) ir really annoys me how they grab your cases off the belts, then make out they have done you a favour, but luckily as we are flying to Mumbai first, then making our way to Goa, we will be coming through the domestic airport, which they don't usually bother with, but if we had the same behaviour at our London airports we would be calling the police, I dont mind paying any one a tip, but not when it is under duress, to someone who has walked the trolly 10 yards.
OK band of brothers lets stick together DONT PAY, in April a porter grabbed our trolley and I was pushing it more than him then he demanded £2 he did nothing needless to say he got nothing, they must learn that greed gets them no wear. if you pay even a £1 for five yards it will soon get to £5 Who's the mug us or them.
A customs officer checking my bags on the way into Goa saw my loose change and he helped himself to s couple of quid, I just let it go as I didn't fancy any 'rubber glove' treatment. The lads trying to carry the bags get nowt off me and even less from the wife!
It's our first time to Goa this year and I had thought about trying to remember to take some pounds coins with me but I think after reading the above posts that I won't bother and as Lez suggests making sure the room boy is taken care of.
just a funny thought..... IMAGINE if we were all on the same flight and we came through arrivals clinging onto our cases with grim looking faces and none of them got a penny!!!!!! thye would not know what had happenend!!!
Jane I am half expecting the NIBBA ( National Indian Bag Boys Association) to be waiting at Dabolim on my arrival waving placards and being dispersed with tear gas by the police because the lads are only going to make £20,000 this year because of my actions
yep you can get the blame ... you are the MASTERMIND of ..........operation NO TIP
