I am hoping someone can help. Having read all of the various news and reviews in respect of Alexandair, I can safely say that we are bricking it about our supposed journey with them to Kos on Saturday night.
As it goes, I am quite a nervous flyer anyway, but having heard that even aviation authorities are describing it as a "disaster waiting to happen", I am desperately trying to sort out alternatives. We have spoken to Sunstar to try and amend the booking - and to be honest, I might as well have been speaking to myself as they were not prepared to offer anything as an alternative. Incidentally - we only booked this 2 weeks ago, right in the midst of the problems with the airline, yet they were still putting people onto this plane knowingly. No other available flights to Kos - I have trawled the net and am presuming that this is cos its bank hols weekend. I have spoken to ABTA, ATOL, TTA and no one can do anything - as in theory, Sunstar have abided by their agreement. Having looked at various news reports from today, the Civil Aviation Authority have advised that they have given the airline "temporary permission to fly until 31 August". Great. We return on the 3rd September, so looks like we had better get used to the greek way of life!
I just wonder if anyone can advise me of any other options - cancellation will be 100% of the holiday cost, no other available flights, and no cooperation from Sunstar. Next stop Watchdog???!
Perhaps a silly question - but does anyone have any good reviews on Alexandair?? Or is really THAT bad??
If cancellation is not on the agenda, I need something to put my mind at rest..................
Thanks in advance
My inlaws (cplsymons) described exactly what they went through.
My father in law is a reasonable man and for him to get so worked up over his holiday really makes me think the time they had was a nightmare.
The whole affair really makes me wary about booking late deals especially when you don't know the flight company.
Cheers Ken.
Alexandair have NOT been banned from flying by any Aviation Authority at present. After the Helios crash, the Alexandair aircraft was grounded for a day for inspections by the Greek CAA. However, all small Greek/Cypriot operators had this, not jyust Alexandair. They were given permission to recommence services. Like I said, the CAA will be keeping a very close eye on the airline and if they find any reason to doubt Alexandair the permission will be pulled.
Also, don't worry about anything happening while you are away. Should Alexandair fold, or be banned from flying to the UK, you will be covered by the ATOL scheme, which Sunstar are a part of.
I know its not easy, but you have to have some faith
As it goes, we managed to get cheap flights on the way out with Monarch, so feel better having just done that.
We will just have to wait and see what happens for the way home, however we will not let anything ruin the holiday now!!
Thanks again,
Jo
Good luck, they are famous for severe delays.
Thanks, I think I might need it!!
be positive, monarch will get you there on time and safely to enjoy your holiday. so if worse comes to worse you get an extra day on the island if your flight home is delayed, cancelled etc. i much rather have a delya going home than there
I am an extremely nervous flyer and even prescribed medication hasn't helped in the past. I am due to fly to Kos with my family this Saturday (3rd September) but have read reports regarding the airline that have made me want to pull out all together. Is it true that they are only permitted to operate temporarily until today? What happens from tomorrow? Are they safe to operate? Please, any help or information or advice would be appreciated because I am very scared but don't want to let my family down. Thank you, Lucy
At this time it was around 1pm italy time. We were told that we would be leaving the airport at 3.30pm to leave to manchester on the same flight. we could see from the departure lounge the aircraft being maintained by dozens of engineere and everyone knew quite well that we wouldnt be leaving at 3.30. the only spokesperson for the airline was the pilot hiself.
After 3.30 past we were being told a couple of more hours and we were given food vouchers. when 11pm came people were really annoyed and the pilot and rest of the cabin crew had gone off to a hotel and left all of us pasengers with a pillow and blanket for us to sleep on the chair in the departure lounge.
But finally at 12.30 we were given another aircraft and left Milan at around 1am. But the disaster doesnt end there.
Alexandair had not transported all of the passengersd luggage onto the new flight (mine being one of them) Alltogether it must have been about 30 famalies who went home without luggage. We got our luggage back 3 days later.
Have these guyd not been grounded, im sure i read this the other day.
I think they were grounded a month or so ago for technical problems, but they're certainly back in the skies, at least when I took this on 24th September!
Darren
Sunstar are not pro-active in supporting complaints and to date have consistently not responded to emails, fax, telephone calls or letters. Travel Trust have been of little or no help. Alexandair is a joke and if still flying shouldnt be. I would advise people to consider carefully before using either of these companies.
How Sunstar have continued to trade so long is absolutely beyond me.
