I am going to Vale de Lobo in September for a two week holiday and anticipate playing some golf. I am not a member of a golf course and so don't have an official handicap but all the golf courses in the area appear to have a requirement for a handicap certificate. I have played courses in this country that have a certificate listed as a requirement but have never been asked. Are the courses in the Algarve likely to actually want to see a certificate - I don't want to lug my clubs to Portugal to find I can't play!!
If I do need a certificate, I don't want to join a golf club for the next few months to get a handicap as I like the flexibility to play other courses in my area, but I have seen organisations that offer a handicap certifcate for players like myself by submitting signed score cards to them. Do any golfers have any comments on these and any recommendations for suitable organisations?
Ive played on a number of course's and not been asked for a certificate, although I have one. They reserve the right to ask to see it, but I think its unusual.

I am definitely in the know in relation to Golf in the Algarve. I play there every year 4-5 times a year.
I book my golf via a superb website that has been around for a couple of years now which allows me to check for times and book them "LIVE" on line.
At first they only had courses in Vilamoura online but they now have a hell of a lot more all with discounted green fees!

I do have a handicap of 16 but the only course I have been asked for it was at The Old Course, but that was during April (High Season).
