I don't think a poll would be very meaningful.

It would only work if everyone liked the same things.

A concise description of the food available and the service given in a restaurant is of more value.

I think you are right.One persons great restaurant is anothers night from hell.A very subjective thing food.So many things go to make up a good meal not just the food.

It is possible the Restaurant thread is about as close as we can get to a "definitive guide" to the best restaurants.

Each year the same names seem to crop up so it must work.

As with any chart, music or whatever, not everyone likes the same things - that's the point, it's just a snapshot of what was most popular at any given time.

We actually tried to compile a list. Linb did the first one a few years back. I did one at the beginning of last season to show top ones for the previous one. However, we found that several restaurants had changed and were no longer being recommended and the list was not really valid anymore. It was worth a try though

Take the top 40 music charts - they are so far away from any music that I like, that to me they become totally irrelevant.

I think the main problem is that any restaurant however good can have a bad night or even a week ,to do with things that are out of their control , even your own opinion can be influenced by a causally remark from a waiter, or the company you are with that evening or how p*ssed you was be the time the food arrived.

We have about 30 places we really like but even then we go to certain place for certain dishes, X is good for sea food, Y for a steak or Z because it has a great atmosphere on certain nights but the food is only OK.

Her indoors is a great cook but by the time you have shopped , cooked and cleared up it is not worth dining at home until very late in the season when all the good places have closed.

We bought out a gas BBQ two years ago and have only used it three times

The location of restaurants is also a problem, some members post half a dozen of their favourites with no indication where they are

I just noticed that Trav3lbug who joined in Dec 2006 is classed as a new member but silentman who joined in 2008 is a Member. I am not picking on silentman and I am sure I could find plenty of other members that joined after Trav3bug but why is Trav3bug still a new member?

I think I have just found out the answer, after I posted the above I suddenly became a Member, 25 posts must be the magic number.
