Can any body help to explain what Baksheesh is? I have been reading up prior to going to Egypt in April and it keeps being mentioned almost as a way of life and seems to be something beyond 'normal' tipping. I just want to try to understand and not do the wrong thing!
Thanks
my understanding has always been that it is tipping or cash, hope this reassures you
baksheesh.... means cash in Arabic!
LOL!! Thanks both, my mind went into overdrive then!
the best way to decribe baksheesh....
In Egypt everyone is friendly.
In England if I were to ask you the directions to the nearest supermarket you would no doubt go out of your way to direct me, or if you were going in that direction you would maybe say "I am going that way, I will show you" having done so you would probably go on your way and feel quite pleased with yourself for your good deed. In Egypt, if someone were to show you the way to a supermarket, they would do so with a smile, but............
they would expect to be rewarded for their trouble, that is baksheesh....
Hope this helps

That makes it a lot clearer and is along the lines I thought, so it is also part of the culture of Egypt and not just tipping as we would understand it.
Thanks
