Hi, we are off to Paphos soon, staying at the Mayfair.
We don't bother too much with the beach for swimming, but we do like to see the fish in the shallows/rock pools.
Does anyone know of the best beach to go to for that?
Also, is the main beach at Paphos sandy or stoney?
Could I fit one more question in please? Is it true that the waterpark in Paphos is really strict about taking picnics in? Do they actually seach and confiscate food/drinks?
Cheers!
I can partly answer a couple of your questions. In Paphos the coastline is mostly rocky but covered with sand, with small coves and outcrops. There are, however, a small number of soft sandy beached areas - some enhanced by the hand of man!
Shingle beaches are nearby - Theres one at Aphrodites Rock.
Its lovely to walk along the coast at Paphos - especially between Tomb of the Kings and the lighthouse / Harbour area!
Waterpark at Paphos - I gather its strict in that if they see you are bringing in your own food they can refuse admission. Not sure if anyone has been chucked out for it or if they have people searching bags and what not at the entrance.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, Stendec!
I am sure that we will find the perfect spot. Thanks for the tip about walking along the coastline. We plan to go to the harbour a lot in the evenings.

I would suggest a visit to Tomb of the Kings then walk round the back of the Venus Beach Hotel next door and onto the beach, Then take the coast walk up towards the lighthouse. You will walk past many hotels, but there are also nice secluded spots and outcrops here and there.
From there I would suggest heading inland a little on one of the footpaths. They will take you into the other archaeological sites (Please pay at the main entrance when you get there) near the harbour. Eventually you will come out right by the harbour bars itself.
Its not signposted at all or anything and its a bit of guesswork to get the right tracks inland, but you cant get lost if you follow the coastline and head towards the lighthouse.
Going away from the Tomb of the Kings at the Venus Beach will take you to some small cliffs and rocky outcrops that are nice, but its a bit ropey after that and not suitable for walking - also lots of building work was taking place that way last time I went (A couple of years ago).

Thanks again Stendec, you have given us some very good information.
We look forward to following that route. We wouldn't have had a clue otherwise. I shall remember to head for the lighthouse!

Go along the coast, past Coral Bay and head for Agios Giorgios. Lovely little fishing harbour with a small beach.
There's also a breakwater running the length of the harbour and on the seaward side, som rock pools. Not big, I should add.

Thanks Drandle!
How long approximately do you think it would take to get to Agios Giorgios from, say, the harbour at Paphos?
It sounds lovely and well worth a try.

It's about 30 minutes or so by car, depending on the time of day. It's well worth a visit and if you have transport you can always drive a bit further on to Lara.

A long way from Paphos, the beach at Protaras, although principally a sandy beach, does have rocky pools below Vrissiana Beach Hotel and Silver Sands Beach Hotel.
The best time to find the fish is late afternoon or early evening.

The lagoon at the Cynthiana Beach hotel is good for fish watching. You will need goggles/mask and just wander around the edges. Its just about waist deep at most. Take a few digestive biccies in a plastic bag, let them get wet and squeeze out a few globules at a time. Fish like it! Either that or get a small stone and knock it against another small stone under the surface. You will soon get a few rainbow wrasse wandering over to see whats going on. The bay itself is a dive site and if it's calm enough you can snorkel around the rocks in the bay and see big shoals. I've come across garfish, moray eels and groupers.
The St George hotel has a similar lagoon.
Try Aghios Georgios or a bay a little further back towards Paphos called Sea Caves. Another dive site and the site of an old harbour. Big inlets, shallow and lots of fish.
Call in the Sunset Cafe too - very pleasant and a widlife refuge out the back!
Have fun!!
