Just seen this report about Benidorm losing its blue flag. I know Benidorm is very proud of its beaches so must be a major blow:-

The main beach in Alicante city too.I'm not surprised last time I was on these beaches you couldn't put your foot down without standing on a fag butt.
Hi wayne zab ... we obviously don't need another discussion about smoking, fag butts, etc. But just in case anyone might think you are speaking from recent experience, we should perhaps clarify that when you raised that similar point a few months ago, you mentioned that your last visit to Benidorm's Levante Beach was in fact 5 or 6 years ago. Obviously much could have changed in that time.
I'll report back in a couple of weeks my honest opinion of the beaches. It will be my first visit to Benidorm.
That's such a shame because I have always found the beaches of Benidorm to be fantastic and they work so hard to keep them clean.
I cant believe they have lost blue flag status,I came back from benidorm last week and the beach was looking as clean as it has always been and I have been going for years
I noticed that in England a few of the Beaches have been downrated because of poorer water quality when they were tested last year. Apparently some of the authorities concerned have said that one of the problems may be linked to how wet last year was and that the drainage system struggled to cope with the extra water coming through it off flooded streets etc, and this has lead to a deteriotation in the water quality. I wonder if something similar could have happened because of the bad storms which happened last year throughout the Costa Blanca. Certainly parts of Benidorms Beaches were swept away, and some of the walkways onto the beach needed rebuilding. So it could be that those periods of freakish weather have had a knock on effect with the drainage system! As for the Beach area itself, i do feel that the Beaches certainly dont look quite as clean as they used to do with regards bits of litter and some "Fag Ends". I feel Wayne Zabs post to be a bit of an exageration to be honest, but over the last couple of years i have noticed slightly more in terms of litter, to be still present on Levante Beach when ive gone there around mid-morning. They always seem to be cleaning the Beach every night though in much the same way, so quite why this is i'm not sure, perhaps they are not being quite as thorough as previously?. But i dont feel its a major issue, and i'm certainly more than happy to sunbathe on the Beach here and have a dip in the sea. I'm not out till late August, but will see what the situation is like then.
I haven't noticed any difference on the beach. Not seen any fag butts either. I have noticed that they have a sign up telling people not to put them out, perhaps they should provide ashtrays.
I never felt I had to worry about standing on rubbish, bottles, fags etc
It's probably something to do with the water pollution rather than the beach itself.
I can't believe any Mediterranean beach has a blue flag in the first place! Whenever there has been heavy rain while we've been there (which is thankfully VERY rarely) the sea has become full of grey runoff from the drains. The Med isn't tidal, so this muck can't go anywhere until the winter storms stir things up, it can only settle on the bottom. The contrast with an Atlantic beach being washed twice a day by tides is pretty obvious.
I`ve always thought Benidorms beaches to be some of the best in the Med. They clean them every day even in the winter. I can say that in the summer months whilst in the water I have noticed a bit of litter now and again but nothing I would have complained about but perhaps this adds to the water quality. Lets hope they manage to get things sorted and get the blue flag back.
In the interests of free speech, can I as why my last post has been removed?
Yes, you have already expressed your experiences of the Levante Beach, albeit from several years ago. Other members have also expressed their experiences. In the interests of friendly and constructive discussion, what we don't need are follow up suggestions that fellow members may like to visit Specsavers, etc.
And for the record the report which was linked in the first thread also wrote about the main beach in Alicante losing its Blue Flag status, this is a beach I see and use on a regular basis.
.what we don't need are follow up suggestions that fellow members may like to visit Specsavers, etc
David, I don't think anybody actually suggested fellow members visit Specsavers and I think I said the persons who have made the decision to remove the flag ought to go to Specsavers, based on my opinion of viewing and walking on the beach very early in the morning.
Sanji ... this is not about you.
Fair enough David, but the fact that I was the person who used the word Specsavers and my post has been removed, and you also used the word Specsavers, I just wanted to clarify that point.
You made reference to Specsavers in a post last weekend, which was removed because of the reaction which followed. wayne zab made reference to Specsavers in a post this morning, which was removed because of the reaction which would have followed. Hope that clarifies.
La Playa de Levante has now got the blue flag back.
Here is a link in the Costa Blanca news about it regaining the flag:-
