Hi,
My daughter Laura and myself have just returned from a really wonderful trip to HK.
We stayed for 10 days ,and could'nt have wished for a better time.
Here is a very brief report on where we stayed, and what we got up to.
AIRLINE
Flew with the new budget airline Oasis from gatwick. I have flown on most of the major airlines ,and have to say that both our outward and return flights were as good as any i have expierienced before.
Caught the airport express ,and free shuttle bus to our first hotel, found this really easy and straight forward.
HOTELS
We stayed at the Royal Garden hotel tst, kowloon for 7 nights.
This hotel is lovely, as good as the shangri-la group that i have stayed at many times before.
The very attractive ,spacious rooftop pool had amazing views of the harbour, and the rooms were an excellant size. v comfy beds, and a chocolate left on your pillow everynight!!.
The staff were very helpful, and the location is great, just around the corner from the mtr .
The other hotel we stayed at [ had to change hotels,as we extented our stay, and could not get in at Royal garden] was the metropark, kowloon.
This hotel is less expensive to stay at, and we certainly missed the luxury touches , although if we had stayed here first i think we would have been quite happy.
The hotel does seem rather tired , and could definatly do with some renovations.
The pool area is very small, and the beds were very hard.
The location, for us ,was not so good, being a 10 min walk from nearest mtr, although the hotel does provide a free shuttle bus to various locations,.
FOOD
We enjoyed some v tasty meals ,at a wide range of eating places,
The revolving 66, have to say the food here was very good[read very varying reports before we came here] the views were stunning, although Laura and myself felt like the odd ones,as all around us were couples [very romantic setting]
Street markets, we had several meals at the markets, really good value for money, we ate delicious huge plateful of prawns, along with various meat and seafood dishes and we expienced no tummy problems
Also had good food at Tuk tuk thai[off hollywood rd, central]
Restaurant in new world centre, kowloon.
and restaurants in tst.
ATTRACTIONS
We went to the peak both during the day time, and in the evening.
Got the ferry to Lantau island, saw the big budda, looked around the village, then walked all the way[ 2 hours] down ,underneath where the cablecar runs to the mtr . This was quite a tiring walk, very hilly, but well marked . Really enjoyed the scenery .
We went to Lamma island, again by ferry, this is a very pretty little island, with nice beaches, greatly spoiled by the huge concrete station, which is very visable.
The walk across the island is fun, and there are a small number of shops to look around, and quite a few very good seafood restaurants.
Ocean park, Laura really enjoyed our day here. I'm not really into huge rides [bit of a coward], although i did go on the raging river ride 3 times. As well as all the rides, there are animals and birds here ,and various shows through out the day ,and a cablecar between the 2 main park areas.
kayaking, i have given loads of details on this day out In a previous posting,so all i will say, is that we had a really fun day,one of our best in HK, and it was so good to see a completly different side to HK.
Stanley , we went to the market ,and had a little walk around, then we jumped on the bus and went to repulse bay ,spent a few hours here, just relaxing, swimming, and enjoying the beautiful sunshine that we don't see in the UK very much. Also went on a harbour cruise, saw the light show, went to the botanical gardens, walked for miles, and got lost lot's of times.
SHOPPING
Being 2 females together, what else could we do ,but enjoy the shopping. and we certainly did shop!!!
We much preferred the markets and the smaller more unusual shops, to the big designer malls [i guess we just hav'nt got designer purses], we bought lots of shoes, tops, and quite a few handicraft items, and pictures.Laura also bought an i.pod, which was far cheaper than uk price.
To sum up, we had a fab trip .it was the first time Laura and myself have ever been away together, i stopped off in HK for 3 days last year on the way to aus, and i knew how much she would enjoy HK, so when heard of the budget airline oasis, i decided that we would have to go.
We have some great photos, and magical memories, and everyone was so kind and friendly,
Thankyou
Suzi
interesting report
you got me confused there for a minute. We have stayed at the Metropark but it was new and in Causeway Bay. I see what has happened. The Metropole is now the Kowloon Metropark.
What did you think about Stanley? We stopped off in Aberdeen on the way back(ordinary bus) and that was interesting.
How was the weather?
When we went a year past Easter there was a lot of work getting done on the Peak- I hope it was all worthwhile- will find out in January
Thanks for the great report Suzi. It's made me even more determined to get back to Hong Kong sooner rather than later I wish Oasis would start up a service from Manchester!
I quite enjoyed stanley, we had a really good look around the market, and walked down to the front ,and along by the 2 small beaches. It was very busy there, seemed to be alot of american tour groups about.
The weather was overall very good, no where near as humid as felt in Bangkok in april.
We had 1 full day of rain, pelted down all day, a couple of sun/cloud days, and about 4 full days of beautiful hot sun.
When i was at the peak last oct ,they were doing work, but its all finished now, and i don't honestly think its alot differant, you still go up to the same viewing level, although they have extended it a little, you just pay extra[only a small amount] now if you want to go up to the top.
Regards
Suzi
It would be very nice if oasis started flying from Manchester, we normally fly from there[ i live in lincolnshire] ,but flying from gatwick, was ok, it only took us an hour more to get there, than when we get the train to man.
I'm sure that eventually oasis will fly from man, they seem to be adding new routes, and the flights were full both ways,so the price is obviously temping people.
Hopefully we will get up the Peak again, if the weather behaves
your hotels have been added to our review page. Do you think you could give them their first reviews for us please? Even just rating them will help other members
Sounds like you had fun. I really enjoyed HK and will go back again at some point.
