Check Emirates for flights from hong Kong to Bangkok. They have a good deal- we found them a lot cheaper than other airways. We spent this last New Year in Bangkok and the weather is fantastic then. Either Phuket or Koh Samui would be good at the beginning of the year. There are so many hotels in Bangkok, just see where the deals are and check reviews. One thing which is a must as far as I'm concerned is that it should be close to the skytrain. ( Saying that, I have stayed at the Bangkok Marriott Resort and Spa( and loved it) and its a boat ride to the skytrain( their own boat).
As to which of Phuket or koh Samui- it depends what you are looking for. I'll let others tell you about Phuket but KS is really just a beach holiday. But after Hong Kong and Bangkok thats all you'll be wanting. And I'm speaking from experience( I was absolutely exhausted by the time we got there :) )
Hong Kong will be pleasant but you may need a jacket for evening. having been in Hong Kong in the summer I much preferred January. Its a place where you walk for miles and its easier when its cooler :)

Coincidentally I have just returned from a very similar itinerary.

HK 4 nights / Krabi 7 nights / BKK 3 days.

In HK we stayed at the Metropark Hotel in Causeway Bay. Lovely hotel, nice location, next to MTR station.

We booked an Emirates flight from HK to Bangkok (10pm flight, worked out at £75 per person) and onward to Krabi the following morning ( 1 night in the Novotel at BKK airport ).

Have you considered heading for your beach resort after HK, finishing up in Bangkok ?

I know that after 4 days in HK we needed a bit of a rest and our batteries were recharged sufficiently for the onslaught which is Bangkok !

In Bangkok we stayed in the Dusit Thani Hotel which we loved both for location and facilities. To come back from a day in the city to this hotel was heaven ! :sun2

I believe there are direct flights to Koh Samui from Hong Kong, cant remember the carrier .

Thai airways fly into KS from Hong Kong, however there is a stopover in BKK.
I would agree that BKK last would be a good idea. I went from HK to BKK and was really done in by the time we got to Koh Samui. We had 5 days in HK and 2 in BKK.

Bangkok Airways have 5x flights a week direct Hong Kong - Koh Samui, a great way of cutting out Bangkok. Cathay Pacific have through fares (London - Hong Kong - Koh Samui - v.v.) that can be really good deals, but they offer them only as Inclusive Tour fares (must be brought in conjunction with at least 3 nights accommodation). Chat to a Far East specialist tour op who could help.

Also daily flights Hong Kong - Phuket with Dragonair, and 3x weekly with Thai.

Personally 1x metropolis a holiday is enough for me!

Thanks for all your replies, I have been dealing with "Escapes" and they have given me these prices,

20 March - Heathrow to Hong Kong (direct)

4 nights Hong Kong - Charterhouse Hotel (Room Only)

14 nights Koh Samui - Imperial Boathouse (Bed & Breakfast)

4 nights Bangkok - Asia Hotel (Room Only)
£1549 per person

also this one,

20 March - Heathrow to Hong Kong (direct)
4 nights Hong Kong - Charterhouse Hotel (Room Only)
14 nights Phuket - Naithonburi Resort (Bed & Breakfast)
4 nights Bangkok - Asia Hotel (Room Only)
£1521 per person

What do you think about doing a package holiday or does it work our to expensive, but on the other hand would it be better as we have never been to that part of the world before.

Has anyone any info on any of the hotels I have been quoted for.

I will take on board the idea of going to bangkok last as opposted to the beach last as that way it will split up the cities and not be to much all together.

thanks again karen

Have stayed at the Naithonburi in Phuket. Very nice 3star plus hotel in a very quiet resort area (most bars and restaurants are shut by 10 pm)...its very Thai with the local school down one end of the beach and chickens and water buffalo wandering around. Nice quiet beach, but a taxi journey to get to somewhere with a bit of life. 5 nights was enough for us before moving on to Krabi.

As for the Boathouse in Samui I know there was some building work going on next door (new hotel)...anyone know if it is finished yet? Otherwise a nice hotel on a good beach (my favourite on Samui).

As for Bangkok might be worth splashing out a few more pennies on the hotel. I've been in the lobby of the Asia and the hotel seemed a little away from the main areas of Bangkok...plus the tuk-tuk drivers outside the hotel dumped me in the middle of nowhere when I refused to go to a gem shop.
