hi
we have recently returned from our holiday , we hired a car before we went paid up front from http://www.TigerCarRental.com who are based in ireland, they confirmed we wouldnt wouldnt have any more charges to pay unless we left the car either without fuel or had damaged it. we filled the car over max so more than we got it with, made sure the avis lady came round checked car infront of us and signed it off, she said everything was fine and we were paid up i asked her if they would put in writing they wouldnt use our cc details as they wouldnt let us rent with out a copy of my hubbys cc details and we were slightly worried about this, she refused but said she was happy to sign our release papers. we received a letter from avis charging our card for registration and 20% vat. although its not a huge amount of money we are very unhappy that these charges have occurred without permission from my hubby or without any notification from them until they had debited the money, ive emailled both tigercarental and avis twice and had no replies so far ive tried to ring them but got put on hold for ages at an expensive call rate. does anyone know what these charges mean . we rang the bank and they said theres nothing they can do and if avis want to keep taking money from our card there is nothing they can do even if we cancel the card. this seems so wrong. we didnt even book with avis it was tigercarental that sorted it out we thought we were dealing with budget, not sure whether to give up but concerned they decide to take more money
Have split this topic and moved it to the Complaints section in the hope it attracts more attention.

thanks for that i thought the banks attitude wasnt good either but they said if you give out your cc details then you should read all the small print, when my husband said can they carry on taking money from our cc they said yes and he asked if he could cancel the card and they replied they would still honour any requests, doesnt seem right, the cc was only left as security incase we damaged car or didnt return it etc not to use to take money from it without hubbys permission
I accept you are not very happy but it is possible that a mistake has been made.
Hire companies do have a limited number of cars and it is normal practice for them to in effect borrow vehicles from one another.
Your contract - no matter who supplied the vehicle was with Tiger Car Rental. You do need to speak to them before you take any action.

Well banks can stop and refund payments on credit cards. My Halifax credit card had two payments of £12.99 to Red Save an internet mail order company. I had used them at christmas but this was last month. The Halifax refunded the money to my account and took it up with Red Save. Get in touch with the fraud department of your bank.
Just had a quick look at TigerCarRental website and it states quite clearly that Administration/Credit Card fee and vat is included in the price.
wendy i also noticed this and it says clearly there is no hidden charges i mentioned this in my last email
its not a huge amount of money but its the principle and worry they could carry on taking more out. we bank with first direct and usually they are helpful
my emails

Karen,
There is no need to worry. The location does take your credit card details when you get there in case something does happen like an accident or not returning the car full with petrol. All location does this. You have my direct email in case anything happens and I can help you. When a complaint is made we get in contact with the location to see what happens and why people were charged extra money. So don't worry at all.
Kind regards

Reading the details on the site the only complaint I can really make is that the Full T&Cs are only available to read during the booking process.
They do say that you will get a voucher that covers you and must produce your driving licence and Credit Card. I can go along with that.
On the information you have provided I fail to understand why they have charged you - the site states quite clearly that the price you pay does cover insurance etc.
Perhaps you need to take some legal advice on this.
There does not seem to be any reason for them to make a charge on your cc. You returned the vehicle with a full tank. You did get the vehicle inspected by a representative of the hire company to confirm it was returned in good condition.
I would suggest that you write to the cc company and explain all this and request that the payment taken is put in dispute.
I would also suggest that you send copies to both Tiger and Avis. You should also contact your local Trading Standards and inform them of the problem.
Whilst you say the amount of money involved is not large, the obvious problem is - and please check all your documents again just in case you have missed something - money has been taken without an adequate explanation, and further sums could be taken.
I used to run a large vehicle hire operation and have a bit more knowledge than most on this topic.

thank you for your help, i will give them a few days longer to reply to my emails as we have had a weekend and maybe the lady from tigercarental is away. its so annoying as we did everything possible to insure this didnt happen, i took a photo of the tank full with mileage shown incase they tried to use this as an excuse when we got home as i wasnt happy handing over the cc and got paper worked signed off etc. but as the rep from tigercarental assured me not to worry i trusted her, then this bill is sent from avis saying they have already taken the money from out cc for registration fee !!!

I had to confess that it was just me desperate to escape this country. But i like the fact that they were keeping a check on my cc.
I also know people who have had their cc refused in america as they had spent a lot of money over a short space of time and not informed the cc company they were leaving the country. So these companies can stop payment.
Karen .Sounds like Avis has made the mistake and they may not have known your contract with tiger included the extra charges When we visit my sister in law in France we always use Holiday Autos but the car rental in France is Hertz and yes they always take our CC details as a guarantee and so far we have never had any extra taken. As far as I can make out by Hertz when we pick our car up the CC guarantee is taken for the £500 excess we would be liable for if the car is damaged which if you pay a small fee to holiday autos at time of booking insures this. also incase they need to charge you petrol.
ive had a reply today from tigercarental the lady i was dealing with has left the company and they are going to look into for me
good thats a start
ive emailled back asking why i wasnt told and why its not on their website but no reply.
i think as long as they dont take any more money out of hubbys cc then we will leave it at that
Fully Inclusive Rates - "No Hidden Extras"
I think you should contact your local Trading Standards and see what they say.

I always advise anyone who is hiring a car abroad to take out cover that ensures, in the event of an incident of any kind, that the cover/insurance they have pays for it even if it costs a little more.
I know a lot of people who say that the will take a chance. Well good luck to them. Just hope they do not regret it.
The website indicates that all charges are included. Registration fees, in my opinion should have been included in the price. At the very least they fall foul of the regulations by not advising that certain local charges may apply.
I know that the amount may seem insignificant but if you multiply it by the total numbers of hires then you start talking about large sums of money.

peter ill email them again and put this to them the company is based in ireland, but i dont think they will reply as they dont seem very easy to contact grr
The company may be in Ireland, but I think the contract was made where you are in England.
just an update, ive emailled them twice and total silence, so looks like im not going to get anywhere. i asked them how can they advertise no hidden costs everything included then charge our cc after we return and suggested that trading standards could be interested in this as i wasnt told about these charges despite asking before booking was there any extras and ive got all the emails to prove this inc the reply from their company, but no reply at all. now what ?
