A group of us booked a Christmas Market Rhine Cruise with Travelscope on the MPS Britannia from 10 Dec 07 to 13 Dec 07. Arrived at Koblenz on Mon 10th where ship was berthed to learn that the Captain had been taken ill and we would not be sailing. This was unfortunate and this we accepted, intially. The Company was trying to locate another Capt so the itinerary was changed to take account of the circumstances. Fair enough.
On Tuesday morning we had free time in Koblenz, an early lunch at 1130 onboard the Britannia then went by Coach to the Cologne Christmas Market in afternoon. On our return we learned a Cpt had been found but refused to sail as the river levels were too high and in any event there was nowhere to berth in Rudesheim. We would be going by Coach instead.
By this time all passengers were becoming angry and a bit suspicious as we could see several large cruise ships on the river.
Also advised that onboard expenditure would have to be paid in Cash as the credit card machine had broken. It seems that attempts to have it repaired were proving difficult. The Purser was unable to accept any other form of payment as they did not bank account details! Very strange.
Staff and Slovakian crew onboard were very helpful and understanding but we sensed they were uncomforable with the situation.
We suspected that the ship had no intention of sailing as there was another smaller ship tied up alongside for the duration.
A trawl of the internet this morning found a reference to the Britannia having been involved in a accident in May 07 when going through a lock causing damage and injury to passengers.
I suspect the ship may not have sailed since then but cannot be certain.
Has anyone out there any knowledge of this ship and encountered a recent or similar experience with the Britannia or Travelscope? If so please let me know.
Britannia collided with one of the biggest bridges in Basel (Switzerland) in May and put several people in hospital. This was put down to a fault in the steering equipment.
It had a problem in some locks in June which caused it to be stuck overnight although there don't appear to have been any casualties and the fault may have been in the lock gates mechanism.
On July 20th it collided with a freighter on the German section of the Rhine, once again this was put down to a steering fault.
As for high water, I can understand the worries - a few years ago it got stuck for 6 hours under a bridge on the Mosel when the water was high!
The Koblenz office of the federal shipping regulators can be contacted at internet@wsa-ko.wsv.de and they might be able to tell you whether it has any form of banning order on it although the credit card problem smells more like the company having finacial trouble rather than technical.
Perhaps your first contact should be with Travelscope.
I've just come across your post and thought you might like to know that I had a holiday on the Britannia the first week in July 2007. We did notice some damage to the side of the ship but were unaware that it had been in a collision! Our trip was from Switzerland to Koblenz and the weather was fairly wet almost the whole way. When we neared Koblenz one of the guides told us that the water level in general had risen so much that had our trip been due to go in the other direction it would not have been possible.
You might be interested in the review I wrote of the holiday in the Benelux forum under 'river cruising'
Kind regards
