Okay we are off to Gambia a week today and are trying to organise our money to take. We understood it was best to take their currancy Dalasi and tried to order it from Barcleys but they said you are unable to buy Dalasi in this country! I then rung Thomsons who we booked our holiday with and they said it was best to take sterling or dollars and you are able to use them out there, but that goes against everything I have read!!
Can someone help with the most up to date info??
Thanks very much!
my friend went to Gambia recently and she said the dalasi is a closed currency so you will only be able to get over there, she recommends taking travellers cheques in us dollars or sterling and exchange them as you go along over ther, enjoy your trip, shirleyv xxxxxxxxxx
It's easiest to take sterling - if you take dollars then you'll be paying for 2 different exchanges (pounds to dollars, then dollars to dalasi) so it will probably cost you more.
So take sterling travellers cheques???
Yes, take sterling travellers cheques. You will have no problem changing them at the Ocean Bay. But you will get a better rate at the exchange office which is about 150 metres down the road when you turn right outside your hotel.
We were there in Dec and just to £10 and £20 pound notes, very easy to change, you got 52 dalasi to the pound, it was counted out for you and then asked you to count it to make sure and it was always correct. I wouldn't mess on with travellers cheques.
probably too late for you now, but don't worry about taking dalasi just change there, Hotels are 50-50 to the pound, exchanges usually about 51 to the pou nd so not much in it.
Ive just managed to get Dalassis from co-op travel, so I can assure you its NOT a closed currency.
Thanks for all your advice, back now and we tool travellers cheques out there which was not a prob at all as easy as changing up cash and much safer if stolen!
