Where did you get this from? Most airlines (MYT, TCX, FCA etc) still have flights in to Dalaman as usual, they are advertising them and selling holidays for those flights anyway.

The first direct flights from the UK by any of the above airlines is about the 25th March 2005 and until then the only flight I know of that goes in direct to Dalaman is Air Berlin but even that maybe finished now.

The only other way to get to Dalaman from the UK is via Istanbul.

Sorry about that, I should have read your post more accurately! I saw May not Feb! John is correct, direct flights start towards the end of March for the holiday season.

Dalaman Airport is a Military base and the airport only operates exterior flights from April/May to late October. However as you say you can go to Istanbul and fly to DLM from there but it adds an extra 2hr20 mins to your flight time

I have heard from various sources that when landing at Dalaman because of the geography of the area and position of airport with runway in line with a mountainous area that take off and landing are done in the same direction :?

Therefore planes taking off would be flying towards the path of incoming aircraft on approach to land and this is rather worrying :? .

Any comments!?

Dont know this particular airport, but would think it unlikely that such a situation exists as a general rule.Aircraft land and take off into the wind although, for technical reasons there are occasions when the opposite may apply.Never the less ,even if what you describe were the norm, international air traffic control procedures demand that suitable seperation is maintained at all times between approaching and departing traffic.

Dont worry and dont be alarmed, the drivers know what they are doing..just have a great holiday :D

I've been to Turkey (Dalaman) 3 times now, going for the 4th time later this year and its always concermed me as well that arriving and departing aircraft use the same runway pointing towards each other! Runway 01 is normally used for landing, and 19 for departures. I wouldn't worry about it though, its a daily routine for the airport and I'm not aware of any problems. Most flights in and out of Dalaman are in the hours of darkness. I've only been once in the light, and those mountains are huge, you'd need the take off performance of a Eurofighter to clear them! ATC are very professional at what they do and there's no way they'd give take off or landing clearance to aircraft unless it was safe to do so. They tend to allow a number of aircraft to land, then hold arriving aircraft and allow a number of aircraft to take off etc. We were kept waiting by the end of the runway for about 20 mins last year waiting for arriving aircraft to land before we could go, along with 2 or 3 other aircraft behind. Also, from what I've seen, arriving aircraft are put on a long final approach. Departing aircraft make a right hand turn off the end of the runway to avoid conflicts. Its a well rehurst procedure. As Paully said, its nothing to worry about, those up front and in the tower know what they are doing. Just enjoy the ride!

Just got back from a great holiday in Olu Deniz. :D , early hours of this morning

But we were stung for 9 kilos of over the weight limit baggage, first choice charged us £50.

We were there for 2 weeks, strangly though my sister & brother-in-law joined us for a week & they left Gatwick OK within their weight allowance, bought a small fridge magnet & nothing else, used lots of their toilitries during the week (& all us girls know toilitries are heavy) & also had 6 kilos excess to pay. :? . Actually we can't understand theirs. :x
OH & something I have never known before, they also made my sister put her medium sized handbag on the weight machine  , but they didn't make me, I have never been asked to put a normal ordinary handbag on
So be careful.

Anyone else found Dalaman like this.

When we were at Dalaman airport last year, we found that they dont bother with overweight baggage if it is a very busy time of the year :D ...

The airport was packed and they were just piling the luggage on the weight machine, tagging them and not even really looking at the weight in some cases... There was a man, 2 women and 2 children in front of us and they have 8 cases (all full) and they didn't even bother with them...

I haven't been at this time of year so i wouldn't know what it is like now... But i will say that im glad they weren't bothered about the luggage with us  as we would have been charged quite abit i think...

 Emsie

Hi Kim

Airlines are really cracking down on excess baggage with cases and hand luggage.

Dalaman were weighting cases when we were there last Sept and charged excess, but not hand luggage which I thought was funny when you seen the size of some peoples bags, some folk were carrying large holdalls as handluggage I was amazed they went into the lockers.

 I read an article this year that airlines were thinking of weighting people and charging them excess weight this was not a joke.

Weight Watchers here I come

Know what you mean about them cracking down.

But I really would dispute my sisters cases weight, + one fridge magnet, - one weeks toilitries for two = 6 kilos over

& have you ever come across a womans handbag being weight & charged for in the excess weight, & her bag is small & light, thank god they didn't weigh mine, I cram a lot more in.

:D We got back from Dalaman last week and there didnt even weigh ours at all :D

And one off our bags was well over :D

Yet the next check in to ours was weighing every one and hand luggage

i think it just depends on which one you get

I've had my handbag weighed with the rest of my luggage on the way out to Turkey from Gatwick.

 they've finally cottoned on to us girls and our handbags

I thought the scales were dodgy last year my husband put his foot under it and it made cases lighter. I would'nt advise anyone to try this though.

I'm panicking now as I left a bag with friends to pick up this time so I know I will be overweight going home. Thats the cases not me

we had our hand luggage weighted in New York. We were 2 kilos over. Stood in front of the guy & took some items out. He weighed the bag and said it was now ok and we stuffed the items we had taken out back into the bag, all infront of him and off we went and he said nothing.

I do think it is only fair that they are cracking down especially on hand luggage. I have seen people bring medium size cases on as hand luggage. They take up most of the over head cabin and there is no room for others to but in their bags.

There's always people like me around to balance it out a bit though, probably why they don't always sting you for the excess. I noticed when I checked in at Dalaman year before last on the way home that my bag weighed 9.5 kilos. :D

Now who says all women pack too much eh?

I just hope they dont weigh me !!

Doesn't it depend on the airline - not the airport. Maybe First Choice have got stricter, wherever you fly from with them?

just been reading your post about being charged for luggage, what is the allowance per person
