Fantastic Datsun, really good reading and on a happy note as well, which is brill. My friend Polly50 likes the Mira and has stayed there. We went with her and her husband to the Mira for a drink when we were over in November. Nice casual atmosphere with very friendly staff and of course the location is superb.
Looking forward to your next instalment, hurry up please :hyper

Good read. Really please to here you had a great time.

Between my first visit and my 2nd i read a lot of negative comments. When I actually got there I noticed very little difference. Glad you found the same :D

I agree Mardon. And if its so bad why do people keep returning? Some people thrive on being negative.
I do understand that everyone is entitled to their opinions but if its all bad with no plus points, then why bother.
But Datsun's report is a like a breath of fresh air, really looking forward to hearing the next bit :D

Morjim Beach

After Christmas we took a taxi up to Morjim Beach, I've been to Mandrem before but never Morjim, we ended up at the Blue Wave shack which also has beach huts you can stay in. We had a very enjoyable time here the beach was a little busier than I thought but nothing like as busy as Calangute there was also quite a few Russians but very few Indians. Morjim is a great beach to walk along which we did several times to stretch the legs. We had a superb lunch of freshly caught Rock fish and had a chat with Agnelo who owned the Blue Wave. He had 2 sizes of beach hut, small with just a bed and larger with own toilet etc. He was busy but said he had one of the larger ones free for the next 2 nights at 2000Rs per night we took him up on this and agreed to return the following day and stay for 2 nights.

So we had another 3 days and 2 nights at Morjim beach and thoroughly enjoyed it. There is an Ayurvedic massage centre at the Blue Wave and my wife and I had a very good massage from the 2 guys who run it, they are both from Kerala, if you do go there I reccommend you give them a try. One of them, Sapeesh, used to do his yoga around sunset and some of the positions he could get into were unbelievable.

Now to the down side about returning to Calangute on the day we did (Sun 30th Dec) our taxi was supposed to come for us around 4pm but didn't get there till 6pm because of the traffic around Calangute. This is the first time for us in Goa over Xmas & New Year and we did not fully realise just how busy Calangute gets in the 2 days before New Year, as thousands of Indian tourists head for Calangute and almost bring the roads to a standstill. The journey back from Morjim wich normally takes 30-40 mins took 3 hours, so take a tip from me, if you are in Calangute just before New Year stay put as it is not worth travelling around because of the traffic. Just walking around Calangute for these few days is difficult because of the amount of traffic and number of people walking around.

By the way if anyone would like details for the Blue Wave I have an email adress and website, well I will have when I find the card.

Will continue later.....

First time I went was over new year. It is indeed CRAZY!

I always get Morjim and Mandrem mixed up. Which is the one you have to cross the bridge to get too as there is a little river between the shacks and the beach?

Ah I like morjim. Really nice beach. I usually go to the shack on the corner which has the area where you can sit at the top. Nice and quiet when i've been.

Restaurants

Some days we had a good meal in the afternoon at the beach shacks so we didn't bother with a meal at night but we did go to

Oriental (at the Mira) this is a really good quality Thai restaurant and we ate hear 3 times I think, especially recommend the Royal Starter which is for 2 to share and is a selection of various starters, great value at 350Rs. My wife also had the steak which she said was superb.

Taste of Tibet (first one you come to heading down the beech road at calangute) try the Momo Platter.

Souza Lobo, still an old favourite and still do a very nice Tandoori Pomfret and Irish Coffee.

Blue Waves at Morjim, the best Rock Fish I've ever tasted (we had this 3 nights in a row).

Kim Faa (Baga Road) fantastic Chinese food.

We never had a bad meal and no stomach upsets either.

Bars & Clubs

Public Bar, basic but usually fun

Log Cabin, we've got to know Babu who runs the place over the years and always have a few nights in there.

Molly Malones, again we have got to know Leslie (the owner) well over the years and had a few good nights in here, it's a place you always get talking to people. Leslie has added an ice cream parlour to the premises which has a superb selection of different flavours.

Kemaki, near Tito's, it's a bit dingy but we have always liked this bar, the music is better than Tito's but it does not get busy till after 2am (open until 6am) Bruno who is the barman at the inside bar is a really good guy.

Tito's, has been done up again, it's classy looking but I don't like it any more as I preferred the days when you could dance outside (around 8 years ago). Also the air conditioning is so high that it is cold and the music is too commercial. We did try to go into Mambo's which has been done up with the dancing now indoors, however, they wanted 500Rs per couple and we only wanted to see what it was like now so we did not bother. Cubana is still closed unfortunately as I liked that place.

Ingo Saturday night market.

This is the first time we have tried this and I thought it was superb. They have 100's of stalls selling everything you need. There were 3 live bands on, a punk/rock band from Germany, a reggae band and a jazz band. There are plenty bars and a great selection of every type of food. If you have not been this is a must do if you are near Arpora.

Purchases

Jimmy Choo & Chanel bags and also 2 Chanel purses for 3,500Rs from shop near Red Lion pub.

Adjustment to dress my wife had bought in Mumbai in April cost 100Rs from tailor opp Mira.

Repair to my wedding ring which we got in Goa 3 years ago, it needed small emerald replaced, this cost 500Rs from small repair shop down the lane at the Red Lion pub.

We also bought loads of things from the chemist which are so cheap compared to ours, this included eye & face creams, mosquito plug in spray & tablets for plug in, various tablets and cold remedies and many other items.

Not sure if there is anything else I can add as my memory is failing me but if I think of anything else worthwhile I will.

Great report Datsun, thanks for that. I love the Mira too and the Oriental restaurant does steaks to die for. It's making my mouth water thinking about it. Wanted to stay at the Mira next November, but couldn't get flights on the right days, but will definately be popping in to see Santos and of course, sampling the steaks at the Oriental again. Best steak in Goa that I have had.
