First time I went to Calangute was in December 1999 and stayed at the Mira Hotel and strangely enough this is where we stayed this time. It's basic but always spotlessly clean and the staff very helpful. I like to be in the middle of everything and it's location is very good fot that. Some people have been saying Calangute has become an eyesore but I don't think it has changed a lot since I first went there. It is busier with traffic, especially over Xmas & New Year, and there are many more Indian & Russian tourists but other than that I don't see a lot of difference in the last 8 years.
I was with my wife and we arrived on Dec 18th by My Travel from Manchester, flight was good, it was on time and to my surprise, as I thought we would be stopping off in Bahrain it went direct to Goa in 9 1/2 hours. We were at the very back of the plane and got off first via the back door so we breezed through passport control, soon had our cases, got a taxi straight away, so from landing to arriving at the Mira was done inside an hour which was probably the fastest ever. We did not have any Rupees and asked the driver to stop at the ATM in Calangute but in the end he was happy to take an English tenner from us which is around 780 Rs at the current exchange rate. As we arrived in good time and knew Santos who was allocating our room we got a good room overlooking the pool, with a fridge and TV included which I did not expect so we were quite happy with the room. We paid £650 each going direct to Thomas Cook website and later found out that others staying there paid a variety of prices going up to £1,250 each, which was paid by a Geordie couple to a Travel Agent, they had a worse room than us and had to pay extra for the fridge and as it was their first time they hated it and intended to move, not sure if they ever did.
We spent a lot of our days on Calangute beach and used only 2 different shacks, Sea Pearl (we have been using this one for years and know them all well) and a new one we found at the Candolim end of Calangute beach called Co Cho Maria (this is run by a lovely guy called Louie, with an infectious laugh). The weather was fantastic we had one cloudy day and the rest was just clear blue skys. We were hardly bothered at all by sellers as the Sea Pearl moves them on and nobody seemed to bother us at Co Cho Maria. As I said earlier there are far more Indian tourists in Calangute these days and when you go down the main steps at Calangute beach 100's of them congregate around this area and just seem to drop litter everywhere as it is a right mess. Apart from this area I found the beaches to be very clean.
To be continued........
