It's about 8 years since I did the trip with Daytrippers, but the basic hotel we stayed in was perfectly adequate (better than the Osborne) and was quite happy that I hadn't paid the extra to upgrade. We did eat at the "posh" hotel for our meals - very nice Chicken Hydrabadi in the evening and fantastic Masala Dosa and Onion Uttapa at breakfast.
To be honest it's a lot cheaper booking it yourself. The return train is about a fiver.A decent 4 star hotel you can get for about 50 pounds a room per night. Also you can get a local guide for a pittance, especialy if you don't like going around in a group.
I would advise on the upgrade. The normal hotel is basic at best. We tried three rooms before we found one acceptable, and I would not call us fussy. The first two had two single beds pushed together with a single sheet stretched longways across the two beds leaving a gap at to and bottom. The third room was OK.
Blimey i only paid 250rs a night for a room in Hampi and that was when the music festival was on . The Paulo overnight coach is not more than £5 one way . Do it your self.
HOWEVER - beware the Hotel Priyadarshini in Hospet.
Avoid it - unless you like dirty bloodstained bedding, have an interest in large cockroaches living in your room, and really are trying to catch some disease.
I was there in March 2008 for two nights - absolutely ghastly!!
Hi ukbill did you do hampi by yourself or did you use one of the travel companies EG daytrippers if you did what company sent you to Priyadarshini hotel so i will know to stay away slan(cheers)
Certainly not knocking Daytrippers, everything laid on for you,but the 3 days/2 nights still only gives you one day to "see" Hampi. Nowhere near enough time, there is over 30 square kilometers to cover.
Do it yourself and you can stay in the bazzar, plenty of new guesthouses thesedays right in the heart of things, but expect to pay around 500rps per night.
Also don't think you get to see the Monkey Temple with Daytrippers, which is a must but not for the faint hearted.
There are over 500 (big) steps, but the views are amazing. Motorboat instead of coracle now takes you over the river, and tuk tuk takes you onward to the temple about 5Km.
