Precautionary warning
was in bulgaria in july, and last year too,and would go back,
brill holl
we got some suspected mosi bites (as you do)which healed as norm
a week later my wife was unwell
tired, sore joints, headaches, temp, etc, like flu, bites became
swollen again and very large (like a bullseye rash) ,
a week after that,at work (as she is a specialist nurse)swollen neck, temp up,blood press up,
was dragged to casualty, nothing found, settled down.
next day at work was seen by at least 6 docs , blood test etc, most puzzled,
this week, same happenned except rash, stiff neck,
admitted in,done bloods, ct scan, x-ray etc ,(she's not happy).
suspected lyme disease, asked if we were hill walking etc,
as this is hard to diagonise, and can be fatal if not treated.
she is in hosp now as we speak awaiting a lumber puncture
to confirm, as the blood test take a week, and dont always show right away,
she is still ok, but confined to isolation room, and has to go see
infectious disease hosp, on tuesday
this lyme disease comes from a small tick that usually
attack deer,
and is common in canada,
but looking up various web sites for disease around bulgaria
they do not recommend innocutations for malaria etc, except for tick bites
the symptons are like above but can take a week to appear
as we were no where near any woods etc, be carefull
this is not common but reconnise the signs and take care!
overall bulgaria is brill, and this could have happenen any where
so dont be put off.
have a fab hol
Sorry to hear you wife is ill. I remember that you stayed at the Kalina Gardens in Sunny Beach.
There's quite a bit on the internet about Lyme Disease, and it appears that it is known to be in parts of Europe including Bulgaria. See HERE
and HERE
Hope she gets well soon and least she was in the right job to get it treated quickly. THIS is all about the treatment.
Peter
I hope that your wife makes a swift recovery.
Another tick-borne disease which effects some people each year in Bulgaria (mainly rural/agricultural areas) is Marseilles Fever/Boutonneuse Fever.
Baldur
let you know how she gets on
I hope your wife recovers quickly. Thank you for taking the time to post a warning on the forum
I found this warning from 2004:
http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/EID/vol10no8/04-0162.htm
"Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) (genus Nairovirus, family Bunyaviridae) causes severe disease with a fatality rate as high as 30%. CCHFV is endemic in the Balkan Peninsula; a number of cases occur every year, sometimes in an epidemic form."
