Come 1pm I had to go into the shade, it was far to warm, and checking the temperture found it to be reaching 38C, and by 4pm, it had top 40C
One other thing though - it wasn't overly hot in Kenya when I was there last year so I didn't go in the pool or sea nearly as much as usual. I ended up with a very uneven tan with paler stripes down my sides. So being up and about is a good thing if tanning is your bag!
As for factors, I think you just have to find what stops you from burning. No point wearing factor 50 if you don't burn with factor 20.
OH likes to sunbathe a bit, but we tend to stick to a vague routine (we usually go to Greece in May, before it gets too hot) I like to watch the sunrise, then OH will go for bread for breakfast. We then do any walking early, or drive to somewhere, have a swim, then lunch, go home for a siesta, swim again, shower, eat again, enjoy some company in a taverna and retire exhausted around ten pm. When on the beach....we try to find one without people....we wander about looking for elusive shells, dipping into the sea for a cool at intervals. We enjoy a balcony/veranda when it's not too hot, and watch the world go by.
we normally go back in hour rooms about 4ish unless we've gone on a day trip and will go back later. In and out the pool all day, or beach
We like a couple of parasols up ans tend to keep in the shade when its at its hottest.
If I am on a land based holiday, I cannot just flop on a sun bed and tend to be out all day doing something...exploring somewhere, visiting somewhere...but try and stay out the sun a little as I can go from milk bottle white to a delicate shade of lobster in a nanno second...even with cream on..if I over do it.
We are normally out in the sun by around 9.30am. By lunchtime when the sun is at it's hottest we'll either put the umberella up, or go and sit on the terrace in the shade for a spot of lunch. After lunch we'd either go back around the pool with the umberella up for an hour, or we'd go for a short walk to have a drink. If we're on a 7 day holiday we don't normally have an afternoon nap, but on a 14 day holiday we'd occasionally go for an hour in the afternoon. This year I spent most of the time in the shade, as due to being pregnant I found it way too hot to be out int he full sun. I too spend the day going in and out of the pool to cool off.
