Hi,
It's been a long time since I have driven a car abroad. I have heard many horror stories from friends and colleagues regarding the Spanish roads, and Spanish drivers. Is it as bad as it is made out to be? I have been told that the motorway on Costa del Sol is the most dangerous in Europe!
Also, does it take long to get used to driving on the right? It must be 20 years since I did it, and then it was just for two days. This time it will be for 11!
Cheers,
Mike
it takes a little getting used to but don,t worry, just keep your eyes on the road for the idiots as there are here in UK.The coast road was one of the better roads actually,in my opinion to drive on,have faith in yourself and you,ll be ok,it,s like driving for the first time when you pass your test lol.i hate driving in town centres with all the roundabouts.
All roundabouts have a picture to show which way round to go, so don't worry about them. Bear in mind though that the Spanish don't really understand their purpose. They think they are meeting points! My children's school bus actually drops off and picks up on roundabouts and it completely blocks the motorway sliproad!
You need to be aware that on some roundabouts you need to give way half way round. Just take it steady and watch for road markings.
One thing that's really good is that when you are turning accross a carriageway, there is usually a place in the middle of the road to stop and wait for the traffic to clear. It's much easier than trying to find a gap in the traffic, both ways. I'm not sure if I've explained that clearly. This was something that worried me at first, because if you don't understand the system , you feel that cars are driving straight at you. They're not. They are going to stop in the middle.
Another difference that is good, is that when turning left, you often have to go right, round a sort of island. This saves you having to sit in the middle of the road waiting to turn.
I've probably confused you more than ever. Perhaps someone will be able to explain these points more simply!
You didn't say where you are heading, but if it's east of Malaga you will be amazed at how quiet the motorways are. Hardly any traffic at all.
If you are going somewhere with narrow streets such as Nerja, be prepared for people to block the road while they nip out for bread or something, leaving their car in the middle of the road!
Have fun!
We had the same in Midi Pyrenees last October, but a lot higher this time.
My only worry was if a car or lorry came at us from the other direction and with little room for manouvre were do you go.
Motorway from Malaga was no problem and quite quiet when ever we went on it. The only time we had a jam was on returning to the airport on Friday.
Driven in Portugal no problem and may be doing so in Malta later this year.

You should have no problem in Malta as they drive on the left, just like the UK

Cheers for the replies.
It's not the drivers you need to look out for, it's the poor signage. I've just returned from a week driving around the Costa Del Sol with no real probs, but I noticed that warnings for roadworks etc. are not high priority. Also some of the destination signs were not as large as Uk signs, so you just need to keep an eye out for them. The
