You should be able to drive from the Spanish border to Carvoeiro in about an hour and a half - motorway all the way except the last few miles.

The Algarve generally is great for watersports but I don't have any detailed knowledge about Carvoeiro. You might find some useful information on http://www.algarve-beach-life.com/algarve-watersports.html. The beaches really are among the best in Europe because there is so much variety, ranging from tiny secret coves right up to 12 mile long stretches of golden sand.

In the Carvoeiro area there is a beach classed in 10 best in the world that is Praia do Marinho.
Carvoeiro is a nice village not too big and you should not have any problem to find places who provide water sports:-)

Thanks for all the replies, very informative.
Unfortunately the villa I fancied is unavailable and most that I've seen are a little too expensive. It's back to the drawingboard for me while I decide between looking at villas a little further away from the sea (and therefor cheaper) or an appartment on a complex.
There's just so much to look at and consider that it all seems very daunting. I'm sure it will be worthwhile though as Potugal just looks lovely.
