Silly question but just saw a duck flying slowly against the wind along the beach ( wind is very strong right now ).
No picture possible as too far away but maybe Alan or someone else can tell me what type it was as it is not in my bird book !
Almost all white with a black head and bill. Broad black strip along the edge of the length of each wing ( at the back and not on the leading edge ) and a broad black strip around the body just ahead of the wings.
Beautiful sight - never seen one before.... wonder if I will see one ever again !
More likely the light made the colours unclear and it was a Shelduck.
check this pic of one in flight
Bingo ! Perfect match !
From 'sheld' - an old English word meaning pied, or black and white because this is how thjey appear seen from a distance. Often seen at sea, particularly in winter. Duck and drake are quite similar unlike many ducks. Quite large, but I've never eaten one.
You gotta be the cleverest wally I know !
Don't encourage him
Well, the Shelduck doesn't appear in my book of Egyptian birds so is it a visitor and where does it come from, Alan?
So, where do you reckon Tadorna tadorna spends the summer? Maybe it was checking out Swisscare, with a view to a flock booking?
Oh Dear that one was soooooo bad
Quack------Quack---Quack
Just think of the BILL he'd end up with.
