Mainly white and black duck could be a drake smew or long-tailed.

More likely the light made the colours unclear and it was a Shelduck.

Bingo ! Perfect match !

You re a genius, Alan !

Now I have to read up on him.

From 'sheld' - an old English word meaning pied, or black and white because this is how thjey appear seen from a distance. Often seen at sea, particularly in winter. Duck and drake are quite similar unlike many ducks. Quite large, but I've never eaten one.

Well, the Shelduck doesn't appear in my book of Egyptian birds so is it a visitor and where does it come from, Alan?

My books don't show the normal range for Shelduck to include the Sinai coast either - but they are reported to occur at Ras Mo in winter.

So, where do you reckon Tadorna tadorna spends the summer? Maybe it was checking out Swisscare, with a view to a flock booking? :rofl
