I am in Olu Deniz and the earthquake was quite scary this afternoon! We were in the bar at the hotel and everything started shaking and rattling, we all left and went outside, it only lasted a few seconds, but a few after shocks still happening.
The hotel suffered a small crack near the pool, and several bars and shops had bottles and things broken.
Electric went off for a while and all guests were told not to go to their rooms for a while.
Everything back to normal in resort now though.

hiya,

been going to turkey last 8 years, never been an issue but knowing it has happened where we are going i am a bit concerned, have checked with forgien office web site and it only states to follow instructions given in resort !!
it has'nt even been on Sky news ?

has anyone else heard anything ? noticed flights are still arriving at Dalaman airport so i take it that everything is going on as normal ?

any advice for us or other travellers would be gratefull

many thanks

Here in Altinkum, our apartment shook for a full 30 seconds at 1.45pm(UK time) which was followed by an after shock lasting a couple of minutes. Life carried on as normal after the event and a lot of people didn't feel it. This is the second serious tremor we've had since September, the last one being 4.7 in magnitude but both were centred in the sea off the Turkish coast. Everyday, somewhere in Turkey, a tremor occurs, only two weeks ago we had a mild one. Gregg, forget about this happening, come to Turkey and concentrate on having a great holiday. :cheers

thanks for that, We've been going to turkey since 2004 sometimes twice a year, its a lovely place and the people are smashing, when you hear of things like this you think back to Japan's problems etc.
Have checked the forgien office website which mentions it did happen and tour operators dont metion anything, also checked dalaman airports and all flights seem to be landing etc to its TURKEY here i come on 25th June :cheers ,

Happy to oblige Gregg, that's what i'm here for. I agree with you about the people, most of them are pretty decent especially when you make the effort to try and speak the language !! Once again, have a thoroughly enjoyable holiday and trouble free journeys. Oh and have a couple of Tuborgs for me while you're in Olu, all the best. :cheers

I am about 45 miles from Marmaris and didn't feel a thing! However a friend on the beach said her sunbed was shuddering a bit. These tremours are very common here, almost daily but they are mostly minor and go fairly unnoticed. There was one last week that my husband and the cats noticed but I didn't. I wouldn't worry too much if you are coming out shortly. Hope you all enjoy your holidays - the sun is shining and the sea is warm now.

I was staying at Club Letoonia, Fethiye on Sunday (came back on Monday - yesterday). I was in the pool when the earthquake happened. It was just a little bit scary. What's amazing is the length of time people said it carried on for. I would have said around 5 seconds or so when it really shook. Some were saying 30 seconds - some said 3 minutes...I've also been laughing a little bit at the melodramatic "I survived the 'quake" news stories.

I was reading on Wiki only a couple of days before how Fethiye had been flattened in 1957, Kayakoyu earlier on, etc. If the possibility of earthquakes stops you from travelling, then forget going to Italy, Mexico, Greece, California, Japan, New Zealand etc. etc. etc. Don't forget Volcanos in Central America, Italy, Bali, Hurricanes in Florida and the Carribean, typhoons in Australia, Tropical diseases almost everywhere else.

Personally, my plane has been struck by lightning travelling back from Spain (actually not really too much of a big deal and actually quite common) and I was involved in a pretty scary bus crash in Guatemala (which I would actually rate as one of the more dangerous destinations). I am still here to tell the tale!

This was my 16th trip to Turkey. I love the climate, the scenery, the people. I've travelled many parts of the world and the Fethiye area happens to be just about my favourite bit of the globe that is within easy striking distance of the UK. This will not put me off going to it one bit.

I could stay in bed with the duvet over my head, but then I suppose the bed sores will get me in the end.

Hi, my self and my 3 kids have just returned from Oludeniz Turkey, we had a wonderful time, it is so beautiful. How ever there has been several earth quakes, one on Sunday 9TH June we were on st Nicolas beach so felt the full force 6.1 then there was one on Wednesday at 1am 4.5. We went to an internet cafe and got some info from the person who runs it. He said there had been at least 25 recently but the 6.1 had been the biggest, I hope it was the last. Even though we are home now, I hope every one that is still there is OK, we were still feeling quite large tremors up until the day we left. I don't wish to worry any one I felt I needed to let you know as I have just returned Home, but hopefully things should settle down in the coming weeks. Earth quakes can happen any where at any time even in England, so enjoy your Holiday. I personally enjoyed the experience as I do believe when its your time you can't change it and you are not in control of that, and that's what I said to my kids don't worry we are safe it is not our time. I also was told by one of the locals that there last biggest quake was in 1957, so hopefully the 6.1 was the biggest one for 2012 because I am most definitely going back there again, It hasn't put me off.
