Can i say this tipping is not an Indian tradition not in Goa or any were it has been brought to Goa by westerners ive been going to Goa for twelve years and in that time the changes are incredible twelve years ago if you offered a Goan a tip he would look at you not knowing what you were doing now they half expect it, taxi drivers i begrudge paying the fare never mind a tip if you new howe much they was over charging you anyway you might feel different? When i was there in April they was building a road with pick and shovel take my word for it they were paid 100rs a day the same as some body carrying your case for 50-100 yards and i dare say that 80-90% of people dont want them to carry it anyway dont spoil Goa any more for the last two years the turist count has been down even at Christmas.

that is surprising news. I can only look at the postings here and they have gone through the roof in the last two years. When I took on the forum mid 2005 it was one that hadn't needed a mod up till then as there weren't that many posts. Now it is the second busiest forum. I had assumed that tourist rates had actually gone up. Are there less Indians going to Goa?
My sister goes for Christmas and she said that there were loads of room vacancies. Also loads of Indian tourists.
Hi Fiona thats what the locals are saying and they are all saying the same and to me it does seem like that to me there`s not as many in the hotels but then there are more hotels i think there are about 1-1.5m turist go to Goa youve got a long way to go yet before you get them all
perhaps the empty rooms may have something to do with prices asked for at that time of year?? I don't know- just putting forward a possible explanation
I wasn't there last season, but the 2 seasons before, any local friends I spoke to, said it was quieter than ever. Personally i think it's the lull before the storm....
Fiona what is the busiest forum and its good to know the goa one is second ...and all down to you ...you sure have a brill bunch of people on the goa forum :ghug...hugs for all the lovely goa folk ....colleen
I think if we discuss it and share our experiences about Goa (out of season) then we feel closer to the place
have a look at the main page- there is one there that makes our forum look quiet
Wouldnt be something to do with poultry would it Fiona?
spot on
It is also a simple fact that each individual establishments' share of this business can still go down every year. There are simply so many more shacks/restauramts/bars/hotels opening up every season that trade gets spread more thinly.
Shacks used to put out say 12 sunbeds. When they were all being used the place felt "full". Now they put out 50 sunbeds. Maybe 25 get used, but the shacks owners feel that their place is half empty, even thogh they in fact have twice as many customers.
Obviously you have a good point Fiona about the cost, the acommodation and flights are IMO at least double what you would pay, the rest of the season.
An article from the Times of India(8 Oct 2007) suggests a 10%-20% increase in foreign tourists.
I note that First choice have taken Phoenix Park and Silver Sands off their website as presumably they are sold out, I know the PP was nearly booked out at the start of summer .
Also when did you ever hear of a businesman in a resort say" oh , yes , this has been a very good busy season"?
The visa situation will not help the tourist trade over here because there are one or two looking at going to other places, so they may have to look at the situation and get their act together next year if it is not to late and they will also lose people who were going to buy over here but now turning their heads towards Malaysia because they encourage Europeans and give them all the help they require even a 10 year visa.

From this article it looks like the Germans will be there first to bag all the best sunbeds . It also states their will be a rise in number of charters due to arrive in Goa, but only by 24.

I hope they all confirm and that they are full for the sake of the local people more than anybody, when do you arrive and how long will you be here for ?.

Flying out 31st Dec and returning on March24th but may change the return date as we have now realised that is Easter monday and therefore it may be more difficult to arrange being met at Heathrow. We are flying with Jet Airways who allow one change to the return flight free of charge. We will make a decision when we are out there.
That's what we thought and were told last year, but when we went to change it, we were told because we had booked at a reduced price it will not stand as a full booking, therefore it cost £100.00 extra, so unfortunately if you are not first class you will have to pay the extra, get it in writing before you leave from your travel agent and the airline. Only advice !!!!. And i hope it helps you.
