Yep, cheap as chips...if you plan to go to all the very expensive rests in town every night then you will need more, but generally its hard spending money, the most expensive thing is travelling in taxis if you dont barter with them never accept the first price they give you and if you can stick to the same driver for your holiday, they are happy to look after you and give you a good price for your trips, they are usually on a salary unless they own their taxi, so the more trips the more tips, and they will wait all day and night if you go to the far out beaches or visit various places of interest,

Thanks Bob.It's one of those places I've always fancied, but never actually got round to going to. My brother in law is 50 in 2010, so we might be taking our main holiday at Easter. As I work in a school we usually go during August.

Hi Helen. Yes id agree with Bob. There are so many wonderful places to eat you wont want to be either stuck to your hotel or cooking yourself! Saying that though when we went B&B I think we only ate breakfast at the hotel once. We usually wait and have some lovely scrambled egg and tomatoes at the shack :sun2

what sort of flight time are we talking about. If we could just get away for a week would it be worth it?
Reply
Helen its a 9/10 hour flight im afraid. Some people go for a week but for me personally i wouldnt. 2 weeks isnt long enough we go for 3. Actually, even 3 isnt long enough for me :)

Working in a school, I don't get holidays at the right time for Goa, it might depend on when Easter will fall.

We went to Las Vegas for 1 week and its about the same journey, so yes if I really wanted to go, I would travel to Goa for a week as well.
Due to (not enough) holidays from work its hard to go for a long spell, just now we go twice for weeks which I prefer to going once for 3 weeks.
I guess we could go for 3 of 4 weeks at a time but it means no holiday weekends going anywhere and no holidays to (this year) Egypt and Las Vegas.

august would not be a good time to go to goa!!! hot, humid and WET. probably most holiday shops etc will be closed. definatly out of season. my advice would be for you, as you work in a school, would be to go during the christmas holidays. great weather then. everything open, great time to go!!!!

are you serious when you say £700 - £800 is enough for a fortnight!!! I almost spent that much at Easter for a week in Torremolinos

CULTURE SHOCK ALERT!

Don't book before doing your homework thoroughly.
There's tons of useful information on here on every subject.

2 or 3* hotels, certainly most of those in North Goa that I've stayed in are not to the same standard of basic Greek/Turkish places I've also stayed in.
I've had friends who've said 'I can do basic, I'm used to that in Greece or Turkey' - and they've been shocked.

Having said that, many people think Goa is fabulous - I'm one of those.

On our first visit to Goa, we thought we were in a 3* hotel, after spending years going to Turkey, Cyprus, Thailand, and finding there 3* accomodation clean and very pleasant, imagine our shock at finding out what the Goa equivelent is, we stayed at the Santa Rita, which is one of the better hotels, but even that was very very basic, after the shock, of finding no pavements, cows walking down the middle of roads, being covered in red dust, you feet are only clean when you have been for a paddle in the sea or have stepped out of a shower, the second you walk out onto the streets they are stinking rotten dirty, hubby got fed up of me saying , LOOK AT THE STATE OF MY FEET, you will fall in love with the place. We far prefer self catering instead of all inclusive.

Helen,

I've been to Goa for a week and did not want to leave, i'd recommend at least 2 weeks and go SC as the sost of going out is so cheap. Depending on whether you want some peace and quite of somewhere with a lot of life you need to decide whether you want to go to the North or the South.

I went at Easter this year and it was great nice and quiet and fab weather apart from one blast of very unseasonal rain. We went out every night and din't budget at all both me and my friend only spent £200 each!! :D

Hope this Helps :cheers

"mmmmmm" STINKING FEET, and accommodation worse that basic Greece!!! I might need to re think. Xmas wouldn't be an option at the moment, as I have 4 small grandchildren, and Xmas is a special time with them.

Trust me Helen ,
It isn't all stinking feet and basic accommodation in Goa, there are lots of good hotels small and large, especially away from Calangute, and some really nice guest houses.
Have you looked at the Unusual and Luxurious thread

Hi Lassi - no I'm just making tentative enquiries at the moment. It looks like EAster 2010 would be our best option at the moment.
