The Dome at State Tower if you fancy a change from Thai food...the view is incredible. It did seem to be attracting a posh crowd when we visited two years ago (it was part of the Meritus State Towers - now Le Bua-where we were staying at the time...I'm not posh so felt a little akward there but the staff were lovely).

First night in Bangkok -16th March, we went to Cabbages and condoms- it was nice but I wouldn't go back as I think it is all geared up for the tourist - very fast food. 2nd night Manhora dinner cruise- would go every time. 3rd night - crepes & co - just past cabb & con - excellent. During the day we ate once off street vendors, just up past nana sky train, on corner - same side as Landmark, it had running water so thought we'd give it a whirl-superb. \\we just pointed to different things, cost 25 baht for dinner + 10 baht for bottle of water. When I go again, I'll know exactly where I'm going and how to get there. Don't think I could have stomached the insects from the vendors.

We did Cabbages and Condoms on our first night in Bangkok..setting was fun but I thought the food was so so, and they got the order wrong.

On the Manorha they really rushed the Coffee. My partners was cold. I had ordered jasmine tea...came as a twinings tea bag stewed in a cup not very good when compared way I had had the tea served earlier in the day at the Erawan Tea rooms. Although it was our third trip on the Manorha, we decided that the food may not be as good as it used to be, although its still an atmospheric cruise.

Thanks for the comments on Cabbages and Condoms. We loved it when we were there( 3 years ago now!). It was our first Thai meal so I have wondered since what we would think of it now.
The Dome- I 've never heard of this one Sunbear.

The Dome...details can be found at http://www.thedomebkk.com/web/index.html

As I said its quite swish as it pulls in the Conde Nast and Tatlers type crowd, and does have great views of Bangkok and the river. Good for a sunset drink. You can't miss the buiding - its the huge one behind the Shangri-La with a golden dome on top - 15 mins walk from Saphin Taksin Sky Train station. Much of the building is taken up with the Le Bua (formally the Meritus)

Fiona - Sunbear,

I must say that I think that C&C is not what it used to be. They have changed the place (including the glass-topped tables with the Condoms) and it has, for me, lost something.

When we were last there in February, we thought that they were trying to head up market - and failing somewhat. Our food was very good, although I can't remember what we had!. The service was indifferent and although they were obviously trying, it had the hallmark of using poorly trained students - just like many UK restaurants.

It seems to have got more 'commercialised' and gimmicky - but we will return, the food and the evening were still enjoyable.

For those who have not been before, I am sure that they will enjoy this restaurant, in its present form.

Sunbear- I have heard of the Dome- just that I know of it as Sirocco.
Vertigo or Sirocco- if I had to pick only one, which would it be?

5 minutes from the Oriental Hotel is Tongue Thai. This is a fabulous restaurant, nothing fancy to look at but the food is first class. Try the steamed seafood in a coconut shell. We would definitely return.
The Mango Tree- just past Patpong. Another one to return to. We booked a table and found we would have had to wait if we hadn't.

try 5th Avenue on the 5t floor of MBK the shopping centre for lunch. Take a card at the entrance and they you choose from about 10 different kitchens. So take a starter from a thai kitchen, main course from a chinese one, etc... you jsut hand them the card when you order and the meal is prepared right there for you. There are tables all around and a 5 piece jazz band playing live.

When you have eaten your fill you take the card to the till and pay for the whole lot in one.... and it's cheap....

5th avenue - is it like the food loft in central chidlom?

Hi.... not tried that one, currently in Abu Dhabi enroute to BKK so will add it to my list!

Livingstones on Suk Soi 33 is well worth checking out...

The tables are outside, around a swimming pool and much of the food is grilled barbecue style.

looks a lovely place- have you stayed there?

Yes, I stayed there a few nights late last year.

I think it was about 1800bts for the cheapest room. The entire place is spotless and it is only a couple of minutes walk from phrom pong BTS station.

I'd recommend Livingstone's to anyone...

My Boss has just text me to say he had dinner at The Dome, his first night in Bangkok (Sunday), staying at Lebua. Cost him £130. Think I will give it a miss when I am there in March.

Can anyone help.

The last time we were in Bangkok we had an excellent seafood meal but do not know where the restaurant was or even what it was called, as we were taken there by taxi. :? We were staying in the Sukhumvit Road area and the taxi ride was only about 5 minutes away from our Hotel.

We would like to go back to this resturant in March. On entering we were shown fish all laid out on ice trays (looked like a Fish Market) and we were able to choose by weight what we wanted to eat. We were then taken over to another stall and shown what vegetables we wanted the fish cooked with. The seating area was up some stairs and quite plush. This restaurant was by no way cheap by Thai standards I seem to recollect it was about £60 (this probably included taxi drivers commission) but the meal was excellent and well worth the money. If anybody else can recall visiting here could you let me know where it is and the name of it. Many Thanks.
