A very interesting debate, one that I'll try not to get political over.

Think you failed on that one, Sanji :-)

Nah, I didn't mention any individual, political party or their particular policies...otherwise, I could have mentioned some of the policies that were put into place by the previous government, of which we are now paying/suffering the effects

I was being extremely nice to them all, I could have called them all a load of :swear :swear :swear :swear :rofl

Just because you weren't talking about party politics doesn't mean that you weren't discussing politics or getting political. Never thought I would 'hear' you say that the EU was a cosy little social club that has nothing to do with power and politics! What's about power is about politics

If that's the only thing that floats your boat, I'll ammend my post to say..
A very interesting debate, one that I'll try not to get too political over and slag any individual off.

Will that satisfy your pedantic desire ?
Can we get back to the issue of the Green tax.? and not if I have been too political...afterall, we have moderators who decide, do we not.?

We indeed do have Moderators who decide on whether a topic is staying or not.

This moderator was just about to lock the topic but will give it another chance....

Discuss the green policy and how it affects your holidays: it will stay open.

Discuss the general "politics" or whatever you want it to name, it will be locked with the request for it to be discussed elsewhere on the great thing called the internet.

Ok, the green policy will not stop me from flying, but the lack of investment in other areas of transport by "whoever", will continue to stop me from travelling in other ways.
Which defeats the whole object of the "green policy" or should I say Green Politics as per the title of this thread.

Hi,
The so-called "Green Policy" on flying will certainly affect everyone who lives outside the old home counties as to where we will spend our holidays. No doubt the proposed 2000 mile flying limit will eminate from London, giving a wider choice of destination to the folks who live in that area, fair do's!! I live in the Glasgow area, about 400 miles from the Metropolis making it a bit harder and more expensive to get to the same destinations. No convenient Eurotunnel to nip across to France or Belgium and connect with flights from Charles de Gaulle, or Zavantem to avoid the green tax. :(

what about flying to Amsterdam though and starting your holiday from there?

With great respect to Sanji her comment only goes to prove my point. I did say that the NIMBY viewpoint would drive this.

I think that the mods/admin team should be congratulated for letting this thread run. Let us all respect that decision by sticking to the point.

I have already said that I have doubts about the issue of global warming. Yes I do think we have contributed to some of the effects. But not just us here in the UK. It is a worldwide problem.

We all agree that the USA has a fascination with the motor car that almost borders on a religion. Nobody must be allowed to disagree. Many claim that the Iraq war was only about securing future oil supplies for America - sod everyone else.

Our politicians, of all persuasions are to be congratulated for tackling the problem. Misguided as they are by false science. At least they are ( or say ) they are going to tackle it.

I would be more confident if all the other nations were to say the same. But they will not. Is it because they do not believe, or are frightened of the reaction of their own electorate.

Much as many may malign our leaders for what they say we, as a nation, are a lot more mature than the rest of the world. We may question what is said, yet if we can be convinced that it is right and true we will support it 100%

Various thoughts keep coming to me on this. The one that frightens me is that wars have been started for a lot less reason than this. If the world as we know it will end, then many countries will see it as a reason to seek to control our dwindling resources.

I do hope people will question what we are being told. If it is an excuse to raise taxes then we need to stand against it. If it really is true then we need to work together to ensure a future for everyone.

Hi Fiona,
We flew to Amsterdam to connect with a flight to Detroit with Northwest, the most annoying part from my point of view is we flew almost the same track back from Amsterdam towards Glasgow again to enter the North Atlantic traffic flows, nearly 800 odd miles, to get about 50 miles away from my house. Not very green!!
As a previous poster said if, as we believe it is, another tax, with no help to the environment what so ever, there should be a backlash towards the Government. They should remember, we put them in power to represent us, the people, not to run roughshod over us by putting policies in place that give them even more power over the electorate. :(

With all due respect FWH, that's a bit unfair when you quote
If the answer to the problem is that I should give up all my "luxuries" then so should everyone else.

That is the point I was trying to make before my post was sabotaged into pedantic point scoring.
The point being that other European countries are getting money from the EEC invested into their rail networks, which gives their civilians a choice of transport and therefore able to make a conscious decision whether that choice/change will contribute to the improvements of global warming and feel they are "doing their bit".... we are not....which defeats the whole green cause.
We are also not having money invested in things like flood barriers, the "green ethos" does not stop at air travel or how much more we can screw out of the motorists.
Other countries are not taking this issue seriously, yet we (Britain) who only contribute 2% to the problem are being taxed once again, and as it is a political decision, then it is impossible to have a debate without bringing politics into it, although we can try not to slag any particular person or party off...which I tried not to do.

I answered truthfully, which is, that the green tax will not stop me from using an aeroplane maybe 4 times a year, it's not a case of "not in my back yard"....it's a case of don't :swear down my back and try telling me it's raining.
Try going over the pond and selling the idea there first.

So as I hate flying and would much rather take a journey to Spain on a modern high speed train, even if it took a few hours more than a plane....
It ain't gonna happen.

Much of my childhood was spent living abroad as my dad was in the army, invariably, we would be flown over. Living and experiencing life abroad when i was younger was very educational for me and i want my kids to have the same experiences and opportunities as i had. For my children, a holiday abroad, although still a holiday, is classed as an educational experience because of the things we do while travelling. We don't just doss by a beach. There are so many places i have yet to explore myself, never mind take my children and to do this... i must fly there. I think all this green stuff regarding flying is just people jumping on the bandwagon to be fashionable or following the latest craze. I don't see all these politicians giving up flying and what about all those fighter jets flying around over the numerous battle zones that we seem to be involved in? Are they not damaging the climate then? or are they running on fresh air?

Wonder who that is.? ......It must be well over 20 years ago and it was taken in Spain....Mallorca I believe, pity people didn't listen then, but they want me to listen now.

Oh dear! Now we have a problem with the Germans

A news item last night reported a proposal to impose speed limits on the autobahns. The aim is to cut vehicle emissions.

Well BMW object - they say that their vehicles are more efficient ( well they would ) and the population complain that by restricting how fast they can drive impinges on their liberties.

I note also that the press is now starting to publish the alternative viewpoints regarding climate change. I thought we had been told that everyone was in agreement.

Commonsense says that we should endeavour to use our resources more efficiently. The old saying waste not want not applies.

As all political parties seem to be singing from the same hymn sheet I see a very rocky road ahead.

Well done the Germans, why on earth are we so docile?

If anyone tried to impose on the French what we have to put up with, the roads would be blocked solid and the country would seize up until the government gave in.

Again good, because there is an alternative viewpoint held by many respected authorities, which should be broadcasted load and clear.
