You don't say what star accom you have booked. 3* and above you should be ok, 4* or above cover some excellent hotels.
For info on bars, entertainment etc., just scroll down this or previous pages and you will come across a wealth of information.
Weather in August is usually fine, similar to Turkey, Greece but the nights can be a little cooler so I would suggest a light long sleeve top or cardi for the missus.( you can buy them there they are that cheap)
Hope this helps, we too are going back in 4 weeks time and it can't come soon enough.

We are going with Balcan and could be anything from a 2* up.
Really NOT looking foward to going now after having just watched Package Holidays From Hell on the TV, and yes you can guess, it featured Balcan Holidays AOA, not good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So would be really gratfull to hear anything positive about them, please!!!!!! :sulk

Just to offer a little bit of reasurance (?sp!) there was a man who posted on here a little while back who had gone alocation on arrival but in the varna area, he stayed in the new golden yavor apartments and was very pleased with his accomodation. Good Luck and remember to come back and let us know how your holiday went !

You'll find an abundance of information on this site, and if you look through old topics or search through the forum (search button up there^) you'll get alot of info about Sunny Beach.

We have always gone with Balkan and never had any problems. Mind you we would never book AOA as we prefer to be selective where we stay. You will see numerous warnings about this on this site but you live and learn.
Hope you don't get the Kristal and enjoy your stay.

I too have never had any problems with Balkans after 15 flights with them. They made a statement last night on Holidays Undercover "They would no longer use the Chrystal Hotel. The Hotel was going to be inspected. Tonyt

Hi Tony,

They made a statement last night on Holidays Undercover "They would no longer use the Chrystal Hotel. The Hotel was going to be inspected.

I heard that as "...... would not use Hotel Kristal *UNTIL* their team had inspected it", rather than a commitment not to use it any longer.

A subtle but important difference.

Hi there its always a worry when you book AOA but on the occassions we have done this we have always landed lucky. I can understand your misgivings watching programmes on TV but PLEASE remember that this is TV and it would be pretty boring viewing if they could not sensationalise it. Millions of people go on holiday every year and only a small handful have any problems. Unfortunately these are the ones that you hear about.
We have just returned from Sunny beach and were on the outskirts, It was one of the best holidays we have ever had and there are loads of things to do for families.
Keep smiling :-)

I've just come back from Sunny Beach with Balkan HOlidays and found them really efficient and helpful, our rep was in the hotel same time every day, welcome meeting was thorough, rep was friendly and informative.
Sunny Beach a great resort for individuals or families, lots of activities laid on for kids, also lots of restaurants and bars, we ate out somewhere different every night. Beach bars good fun, generally locals couldn't be nicer - though I was treated very badly by a waitress in teh Corner Bar near the centre (near Kudon hotel?) so we only had one drink there the whole fortnight. Everywhere else was fine.
It's best holiday I've had in ages, I'd definitely recommend Sunny Beach (go for 4* hotel if you can, they're quite a high standard and very clean).

Hello,

We are going to Bulgaria on 05 September for one week we are staying at the Hotel Zefir in Sunny Beach, which was advetised by Thomas Cook as a three star but after checking different websites it appears to be two star. I have seen mixed reviews about hotels, weather and how to take spending money and am now a little nervous about going. I was planning to take all of our spending money in Lev and put it in a safe deposit box as soon as we got there. However I have noticed that all the safe deposit boxes seem to be in hotel receptions I am now a little concerned. I also require a Gluten free diet and my friend is a vegetarian, what is the food like? I am beginning to wish I had asked these questions before I booked!! :?

Strongly suggest that you don't take Leva, as the exchange rate here will be much lower than in Bulgaria.

If you are going to take cash, take clean, unmarked Sterling notes (note: Scottish notes are not accepted) and only change them in banks/hotels NOT in the street or exchange booths - or you will be 'ripped off'!

Safe deposit boxes in reception tend to be safer than in your room, as there are usually more people around - more 'eyes' = greater safety.

Hi Hayles
as said already do not take all your cash in local currency, another reason being you will probably have too much cash! the cost of living is very low in Bulgaria. The safety deposit boxes in reception are a great idea for the reasons already stated.
As for special diets it is the same as many other countries, there is a wide selection of foods available although I do not recall seeing gluten free products, but then they are not widely available in any of the resorts I have been to.
We stayed opposite the hotel Zefir and it looked fine to me, don't worry too much just keep an open mind, we had a great week and the weather and people are lovely

Thanks very much for the info Baldur and Morgan you have put my mind at rest.

I am usually very laid back about holidays but I am going with friends and it was me that suggested going to Bulgaria so I would feel a little responsible if we had a bad time!

Thanks again for putting my mind at rest.

Hayles :) :)

Hi Hayles - My partner also needs a gluten-free diet and we are heading off to Tiara hotel in Sandy Beach Sept 19. I'd be really interested to hear from you about whether the GF diet was a problem while you're out there. We've never been to Bulgaria before but have usually found a GF diet is okay in most big hotels, though explaining it in a forwign language can be a bit challenging - might be a good idea to brush up on some key German phrases first... anyone know the German (or even the Bulgarian) for "Does this food have wheat or barley in it, as I have an allergy?"
