I booked and paid for a flight to South Africa from manchester, via Amsterdam with Expedia on KLM last April. I have had a number of emails informing me that the flight times were changing, but that it wouldn't affect my conection. Then I received an email to contact Expedia in Aug. They told me that my flight from Amsterdam to Jo Burg was fine, but the Man-Amsterdam was cancelled. After receiving different information I have been told that I can have a refund, but it will now cost me a lot more to re-book with another company (at least double).
Is the company liable for transport to Amsterdam? This was booked as ONE flight, MAN-JHB, now I have either the option of cancelling the WHOLE flight and getting a refund or making my own arrangements to get to Amsterdam to catch the flight from there!!
P.S. There was a mention of a 25% cancellation charge if I wish to take the refund!!
I will struggle to call Ros in office hours as I work full time and I'm not
allowd to make personal calls.
P.P.S. I have emailed and phoned Expedia on numerous occasions and have yet to receive a positive response, besides "we are looking into it"

i would find a way of phoning Ros if I were you! You have to get breaks after all. I have had a quick look at the Safe and Sound booklet and can't find an answer there.
Thanks for the quick reply, I'll try my best, Lisa,x
keep us informed!
Try and come to some agreement to go on an earlier flight to Amsterdam and get a hotel. I have done this and was luckey enough to have ALL payed.
That'd be absolutely fine, but at the moment, they are saying that I'VE got to pay to get to Amsterdam to get the same flight to Jo Burg. I thought that if I booked a flight from Man-JHB, then the company had to make arrangements AND pay for me to get to my destination if THEY cancelled or changed part of route?
I understand that when you book a flight from point a to point b it's the responsibility of the carrier to ensure you are transported from a to b. They aren't required to fly you the entire way - sometimes they may be diverted and complete/start the journey by road/rail.
I don't even think they are obligated to meet the times too closely.
This is covered by the Warsaw convention. I'm guessing you need to have booked the full journey with one carrier. Connections then become the responsibility of that carrier and if one leg is delayed/cancelled they have an obligation to transport you by alternate means.
I cannot believe you are being told to make your own way to Schipol. Check your tickets (assuming you have them) and confirm that the carrier on both outbound legs is KLM. As regards cancellation and the hint you may be charged - they are having a laugh I believe. the fact that they've cancelled the flight from Man to AMS requires them to compensate YOU. Check out EC261/2004 rules on this subject. You'll find more info here

I've read these rules a few moments ago. I understand you should be offered either a refund or a re-routing to your destination. They are not obliged to offer, in addition, compensation as you've been informed of the cancellation BEFORE the due departure.
So, press KLM or Expedia to re-route you to S.A. This could mean a flight from Man to AMS with, say, Jet2

This link will show you that such flights are available for as little as 1 pound plus taxes.
Hope this helps.

Yes, it was ONE booking, not two seperate ones, so as I thought, they need to get me to Amsterdam at a charge to them!
Thanks ever-so-much

Hi lisab, hope you get the flihgts sorted,I would give Expedia a miss in future.
I have travelled with KLM last year to SA and although they were fine there service has gone down the pan of late.It is their responsibility to get you on a suitable flight to AMS as you have entered into a contract with them and although there are various rules and loopholes its down to KLM and not you.
They do have a customer relations office in london which is far more efficent than Amsterdam, sorry i dont know the number but its on the KLM website and ring them.I think you may get it sorted that way.
Hope it works out OK and have a great holiday I`m in cape town in feb but going SAA this time
Lisa,x
