We booked a flight and accommodation through Travel Republic and decided to opt for flight meals, as there are 5 of us this cost £50. We travelled in July. On the outbound flight the cabin crew announced that the meals were complimentary! So, everyone got a meal, good if you haven't been charged bad if you have. The same happened on the return journey. I have been in contact with Travel Republic since August, as i feel that if the meals were free then i want a refund and today I received my response from Freedom Flights.
Dear
Thank you for your letter regarding your journey to Fuerteventura.
Freedom Flights, who act as a Tour Operator has a policy of charging for meals. Some airlines flights are shared with other Tour Operators who may or may not provide a food inclusive price to the client. If the client does not pre purchase food there is an opportunity to buy a meal from the cabin crew.
On occassions where a surplus of food has been ordered it is at the Crew's discretion whether to offer these on a complimentary basis to passengers. Whilst this is of course benefit to those who have not paid for a meal, regrettably we would not refund customers who have paid for meals as meals were provided.
I was concerned to learn of the remarks made by the staff of British Midland and i have passed my concerns to the airline with regard to the provision of meals on your journey.
Do you think I should keep trying for this refund or am I wasting time?
It has taken 3 months for them to give me this reply.
Thanks
My personal opinion is that you paid for a meal and were given one. I'm not sure that you can claim a refund as they have fulfilled their part of the agreement.
Yes, it is annoying when others who didn't pay got a free meal but at the end of the day you did get what you paid for. Put it down to experience and don't opt to pay for a meal next time. It might be you who gets the free one

It's the same as paying £200 for you flight and finding that the person sitting next to you only paid £100 . These things happen I'm afraid.
Yip, know how annoying it is having booked a holiday in May 2005 for Aug 2006 and then found out that the person in a far better room than us paid 2 thirds less than us and 2 weeks before they travelled. Ho hum
At the end of the day it doesn't seem fair, but I don't think there's a lot you can do - sorry

Mrs Bradley actually has a valid point. I too was a `victim` of XL`s pricing policy....All XL flights that had a V next to them were ones where you had to pay for the meal. The ones without such a letter and the BMI charters all fell into this category, had the meal prices built into the flight cost. Where the con comes in was that XL then invited people like Mrs Bradley and myself to pay for meals.
I got this from someone at XL`s customer service line, in an indiscrete moment....However you try getting the %%%^^^s to send you a claim form or repay what they owe you. Use XL as an airline of last resort

Or finding out that the holiday you paid £2.000 for, another guest in your Hotel paid only £900 for the identical holiday to yours. It happens.
I to paid for a complimentary meal on an XL flight. They told me to send my invoice and they would refund my money.I got a reply saying because of increased security at airports they would not be able to do anything for 6 weeks and NOT to contact them again during this time!.I will be on the phone in the morning to them.
