Our little girl will be 2.5 if we fly out on our hols in October. We're looking at going to crete. We've found a holiday but flight time departing is 5pm which is ok but coming back the flight departs at 11.55pm and doesn't get in until 2.00am. Would we be mad to do this with a toddler? We've previously flown shorter flights (ibiza, majorca) and always picked pretty decent times.
Anyone got any advice/experience?
im dreading this holiday flight as its morning (early) and a afternoon flight so i will have four hours to occupy him rather than say an hour he he. hope all gos well for you and im sure you will be fine, it is a bonus when they can sleep as you get a little break.
enjoy your hols
laura
(hope this helps, let me know if you want anymore info)
In fact it was easier than the outbound flight as the 2year old, didn't like being confined to the seat and kept saying 'want to get off now!!'
Denny
Thanks both. Gould, we did an early morning flight to Ibiza in May. Our little girl was a couple of weeks off being 2. She was fine, except we were up early to do the 2hr drive to the airport and instead of her sleeping in the car she was excited and was awake so by the time we were landing in Ibiza she had a bit of a meltdown, mainly because she wanted to be in her own seat (we'd managed to get a free seat for her), but the stewardess made me have her on my lap. I should have just waited til the stewardess had sat down and then sat her back on her own seat and we wouldn't have had all the crying. Apart from that 10 minutes to landing she was fine. I'm sure your morning flight won't be a problem.
Aviation law states that a child under 2 has to sit on a parents lap for take off or landing, regardless of whether there is a seat available for them. Denny
Yes i'm aware of that Denny. Thanks.
hi woody's girl, ive got loads of new surprise toys for him which should help, just a bit worried about waking him up at 3am to leave, but im sure it will be fine, hope you have a great time and the little one is ok with the flight, fingers crossed all wells on ours only 8 weeks now
I am going to the Domican Republic with a 16 month old......on my lap !!! and a 5 year old........the flight is nearly 10 hours....intresting hey !!!! lol.....I think a strong drink will be needed..........!!!!!!!
Bea
hi bea, heres that drink, let us know how you get on, i went to mexico when i was pregnant, and it was a long journey, hope all go's well x
Cheers !!!!! lol..
hey bea, along with the munchies (not to sugary mind as they may get hyper lol), let them take some familar toys/books, and then maybe get a few surprise toys/books so when they get a bit bored you can be like wow! look at this new toy, may keep them quiet for a little bit ( just a thought)
ive only done one really bad night flight and it was hell with a young one, problem we had the apartments would'nt let us keep our room on, so we was dumped on the streets so to speak, so we had just over ten hours to wait for our flight home, then low and behold a further 3 hours delay in the airport, we did try to get the young one some shut eye on what ever seats we could find through the day and night but it was hard to let her rest due to moving from apartment to bars restraunts, then to the coach, then airport with all the cases, it was all desterbed sleep for her so she was ratty all through the flight home, so there is a lot to take into account on night flights, i would suppose if you have a really young one they can sleep on a cloths line, but any older and you have problems
When we had late flights with our little one, he was great, went to sleep as soon as we took off, woke up when we landed, back to sleep again in the car, stirred a bit putting him to bed, then back off to sleep till about 10am. As he's gotten older he's scared incase he misses anything and tends to try and stay awake, sandman usually wins though.
i think the day time flights are more of a pain with little ones & they are not tired & it is daylight so they want to be looking around everywhere!
good luck & have a great holiday
We have day flights this time both ways, and I feel it will be a different kettle of fish this time, so I will probably be exausted by time we get to Cala n bosch, has anyone got any ideas how to keep a 2 and half year old entertained for 2 and half hours, not that long I know, but it is when they are bored.
Or take a pack of cards and play *Snap* (but that can get them a tad excitable at times
so maybe not good for the plane after all...)
jackie15... when my girls were younger, i always went to the pound shop prior to our departure, i got a few toys and nick nacks, it always kept them entertained, just make sure you dont show the kids what you have got them befor the journey, it really does make all the difference, mine are now young teenagers and cant find anyway of keeping them entertained...so wish they were younger!
i also have a morning flight and afternoon flight on return, and my son will be 2 and a half when we fly, i have been out and got him little surprises, i will hide them in my hand luggage and when we are on the plane i will surprise him at different times through out the flight with a little toy/book, also helps while away as he has something to play with. i did the same last year and it worked till he fell asleep (night flight) lol,
i also let him take a few of his fav toys just so he has something he is use to,
laura (let us know how you get on)
I buy mine sticker books, funny faces or dinosaurs etc, you can get them from the cheap book shops, also cheap colouring books & crayons, kept my youngest quiet for a while.
