oh dear- that was some hen night! The only thing I can suggest is, when at rest, to raise your ankle as high as you can, as often as you can. Its supposed to be above the heart. That was what I was told when I broke my ankle. Hopefully others have advice. We can't have you hobbling up the aisle for your wedding!

if its noticeable you may be better off getting a fit to fly letter from the doctor...hate to think of you arriving for the flight and being refused :duh

I sympathise with you - I twisted my ankle very badly on holiday in Turkey a couple of years ago, it swelled up, was very sore and completely spoiled the rest of my holiday  I was concerned about flying home with it, and it did puff up a bit more whilst travelling. When I got back home I bought a good tubular support bandage from the chemist and the swelling went down after a few days, although it was a bit achey for a while afterwards (if you use a support bandage you mustn't wear it whilst sleeping). The best thing to do is take some ibuprofen, keep your foot raised as much as possible, apply ice to the swelling if you can, and see your GP as soon as possible for advice on flying.

Would certainly recommend you wearing the flight socks to help keep the swelling down.Take half an asprin before flying as well as it thins the blood slightly.

Personally if it is still sore by the middle of this week I'd present to A & E to get an x-ray just to be on the safe side. It probably IS just a sprain, but I wouldn't want the worry of being in Thailand (plus the wedding) - without being SURE!!

I'd suggest that you go to your doctors or if there's another walk in centre nearby, go to them... I've heard so many stories about small fractures going un noticed! Especially as you're flying long haul.
If you can't, try to keep your weight off it and definatly look into in flight socks.

There are several studies that show that taking asprin does not stop a person getting a DVT, and can infact aggravate bleeding in the stomach.- although various other studies have found that taking 75mgs of dispersable asprin a couple of days before flying and for a couple of days after, does benefit.!!!
I would definately go and see your GP before you fly, as wearing a flight sock on a swollen leg may not be a good idea.. I would get medical advice first just to be on the safe side. Denny

They tend to try and get away without x-raying peeps now becos' of the cost but if I were you if you're in ANY doubt that it might be broken demand one (mind if it is broken you might end up with a pot on for your walk down the aisle so I guess you have to weigh things up!

My elderly uncle fell early in the year - paramedics were called, said he was okay. He was in agony, GP came out and said he was okay. He was rushed to hospital 2 days later by emergency GP as she was concerned at the amount of pain he was in, A&E doctor was downright rude to my Mum and asked what she expected to achieve by having an x-ray done 5 days after the fall? Mum said she wanted an x-ray doing, it was done and he had a fractured pelvis!

Add to that our local lollipop lady fell and hurt her ankle early December, she was refused an x-ray and told she'd sprained it, she was still having problems with it at Christmas, they agreed to x-ray and she had broken 3 bones in her foot!

Good luck with the wedding!

Hi,
I hope your ankle is getting better now, sprains / pulled and torn ligaments can be just as painful and sometimes more so than a break, they can also take several weeks to get better. Generally the advice so far is about right, R.I.C.E rest, ice, compression, elevation. Ibuprofen (400mgs 3 times a day) can be good for helping with any swelling, just be careful taking it, advoid it if you are asthmatic or have stomach ulcers. As for the asprin, yes some docs advise this before flying for peeps at higher risk of DVT, or those who have had certain types of surgery within the last few months before flying, however in your case asprin will do nothing for you..... not that it does you any harm either as long as you have no gastric probs! If you have managed to have it xrayed by now then hopefully all was well, if you have not then see how it is going, if you are weight bearing on it and the swelling and bruising is subsiding then it is likely a sprain, dont be to hard on Docs not keen to xray, its not actually always about the cost, remember xrays do use radiation, and its not a good idea to be expossed to this unnecessarily no matter how small the amount.
Hope all goes well with the wedding!
Good luck!
Katie.
