There's been a lot of talk about food prices (as in groceries for self catering) being really increased this year - anyone been recently that can advise? things such as bread / milk / eggs y'know - the basics?
thanks for any replies
tracy
food prices haven't increased at all (or only marginally) but here's my tip. if you see lots of spanish people in a shop it's because that shop has normal prices and normal merchandise. you'll find such places in the local markets where you can buy local produce veg, meat and fish at reasonable prices, or the BIG supermarkets syp/eroski/suma/hiper centro where the quality isn't so good, but prices are fairly low.
if you want to pay a fortune over the odds then search out mother's pride bread, heinz baked beans, walkers crisps and watneys red barrel in your 24 hour a day spa shop in your resort.

I have been to the 'eroski' before so if their prices haven't changed much that's good!!

We were wondering the same so im glad you posted traciep68. My mum has just returned from Benidorm and whilst I appreciate its a completely different place, she worried with me some of the prices of things. She paid €2.20 for a can of coke and €3.50 for a cornetto which at today's current exchange rate, worked out around £2 for a coke and £3 for a ice cream !
OMG i hope these Benidorm prices DO NOT Ibiza prices - please someone re-assure me n Sarah that we don't need to win the lottery to go on a 2 week self catering holiday :o(
I`ve been to both Ibiza and Benidorm lots of times and there are still places that rip you off but lots of places where you can get a coke for 1 euro and a pint for a euro. Menu of the day including half a bottle of wine for under 10 euros. If you want a can of coke buy it from the supermarket, ice creams too are alot cheaper from the sumermarket. If you go to a large supermarket and buy spainish products you will find things cheaper than the uk. If you want beans and cearel take some in your case, take some coffee and tea, wasshing up stuff.
I went to Benalmadena at easter and I watched what we spent by going in the bars that had there prices displayed outside that way I knew what to expect, I actually spent a lot less than the year before by doing this. I also did notice that a lot more bars had offers on. If things are quiet the bars wil bring their prices down.
I wouldn`t worry too much, we don`t take loads of spend but we are still going away 3 times this year even though the pound isn`t strong.
We are going to Ibiza with about 10 other people and staying in a villa. We have already discussed and agreed on a "purse" that we all contribute towards and then use the money for food shopping and alcohol. Hopefully this will work out the best way to go.
Only just over a week to go so im dead excited Traciep68, when do you go? If I go before you, I will post a price list of the basics!
Sarah

As long as I can buy San Miguel by the litre bottle (one of the best reasons for visiting Spain) and basic food that dont cost the earth, I dont mind. I can only spend what I have.
Thanks for the list though.
Christine. I know, I was surprised when mum said it wasnt a little supermarket but quite a big one. I think it was just inflated Beni prices personally.
I shall take some basics with me - pesto sauce (my daughter lives on the stuff with pasta which I can buy anywhere), some variety cereals and of course my tea bags. Im not fussy about buying unknown brands and never have bothered to find known brands when holidaying (apart from tea) so im sure it will be fine.
Happy holidays all.
Sarah
Food prices. I dont think these have changed significantly. Think my mum was ripped off to be honest in Benidorm.
I cant remember exact prices but things were roughly the same as last year and we didnt spend anything in excess. I think if you go for the named brands then you will find things more expensive but shop around for the local brands as they are just as good, if not better. We used the new Eroski supermarket in Es Cana and it was brilliant for everything we needed. We did a €300 shop on the first day (Monday) which kept us going till the Friday (there were 11 of us in our group), this included a very large amount of beer, wine and cider We did have to top up things like milk and bread.
Hope that helps
Sarah
Can you tell me where the Eroski supermarket is in Es Cana (or nearby bars/hotels if you don't know the street name)?
Thanks
The new Eroski supermarket is on the Es Cana road in Santa Eulalia. It is just after the turning for Mangos.
