It's not that far, maybe an hour away. Are you driving? I think here might be a train, you should be able to find that out online somewhere.

Fort Lauderdale is 25 miles from Miami. You would need to rent a car or get a taxi from Miami - about an hour.
It is a beach town. You can get around the sights on the Water Taxi http://www.watertaxi.com/watertaxi/fort-lauderdale/
or on a HOHO bus, the Sun Trolley - which is free. http://www.suntrolley.com/
If you want to go further afield than around the beach zone then you have to get a car.
What's to do for 5 days? Depends whether you like beach vacations. Go to Las Olas Blvd to shop/eat/people watch- it is walkable from the beach, or if you want major shopping take a trip to Sawgrass Mills - 350 shops. IMO it's much nicer than Miami, but much smaller.
