Government saying police protection for shops that stay open... I'm not sure how much this will effect Calangute etc though... Just have to see... Apparently they are enforcing section 144 - although not exactly sure what that is - anyone know???

The bandh (strike) is to protest the desecration of churches in Goa and other parts of India. It appears to be quite widespread, and most places are closed. It is only for 1 day - everything should be back to normal tomorrow.

We went into Vasco today, and everything was closed except for a couple of chemist's and the state run banks. So it definitely has widespread support.

The mis-information in this thread is horrific.
The incorrect statements are made as FACT and are not!
If you are going to post INFORMATION, not opinion, on this forum, please make sure you know what you are talking about!
1) The strike, which was virtually 100%, was a very worrying development here, despite the frivolous comments.
2) It had nothing to do with any Minister's son and police charges...........NOTHING
3) It had nothing to do with attacks on churches and Christians elsewhere in India..........NOTHING

It was organised by the Hindu extremists responsible for the attacks in (3) above to protest against 500 alleged "desecrations" of Hindu temples in remote areas of Goa. The general feeling here is that most of these did not happen and the whole thing is just an excuse to kick off religious violence here.

These are potentially dangerous times and this sort of light-hearted mis-information is not acceptible. Even holiday-makers will be at risk if this kicks off, never mind so-called long stay Brits.................

"Foreigners are allowed entry and stay in India at the pleasure of the Government ......" in other words, they can chuck you out when they choose !!!

Still has me beat - how can anyone buy property on a six month visa? :think
Is there not some rule about 183 days residency?
Reply
legally you cant buy on a 6 month tourist visa, never have, never will,
the only way you can buy now is to set up a legit company ( not a business so you can just buy your house it needs to be trading) and have a long term business visa, which to my knowledge very few people have been able to get, i know of 2 and they got theirs in Nepal. even a guy whos has been here 19 years and has held a business visa for many of the years only got a 6 month oneAnd please be warned if you get caught renting your property without the proper clearence from the authorities its big trouble, and people will dob you in through sheer jealousy
Anyway if you read all the nightmare stories on the EP sites you would never ever buy here you'd be mad to.
Johnny five is correct there is alot of unrest here and i feel alot more to come as the tourist season here will not be a good one due to the credit crunch/fuel etc prices have gone up and continue to go up everyday tomatoes rp30 per kg so people are going to be figthing for trade literally!!!!!

are a lot of expats leaving? Or are they stuck as they can't get money for their business or property? I was speaking with someone recently who has now left Goa and heard all the problems they had. Its sad to hear of people who had gone to Goa and loved the place and the people, who have had to leave very disillusioned and sad.

The answer to your question is a big yes Fiona, 6 of my friends had businesses here and have now left and long termers arent returning, people who can sell their properties are either selling and renting or leaving, sad to say over the past year and a half many people havent returned.
What with the problems with the indian government only issuing 6 months a time on visa's even business one, people with business cant spare the time to leave their business's to go out of india to get their visa's.
The government is always changing the goal posts and afraid to say some of the goan's attitudes towards FN's is not nice.
They just want us on holiday and not long term, very racist, wonder what they would be like if they were in the UK and things like property scams had happened to them !!!!
There is a list at the registrars office that actually tells people if they are banned from selling there properties, this includes, FN's NRI and PIO's

Its very very strange that the Americans can get a 10yr visa and the Russians get a visa on arrival yet the British have just a 6 month visa and have to apply and pay indirectly feeding 2 pockets instead of one Has the bureaucracy gone crazy

Sun Sand Subversion - thanks to goanvoice.org.uk

the Russians get it all.

It is entirely possible given the sheer size of the Russian fedreation and the fact that mass Russian tourism is just emerging that the infrastructure in Russia for getting a visa is not in place.

The Goan authorities seem to want to encourage more Russian visitors so it looks like they are allowing more TLPs.

Interesting article in goanvoice regarding visas on arrival.I and many others on this forum have commented how much this would help boost tourism to Goa.I know of several people who will not go because they cannot be bothered with the convoluted process.Multiply that all over the country and you can see how many people may be choosing Thailand,Bali or Sri Lanka over Goa.

Visa on Arrival is the biggest single thing Goa could do to attract more visitors. As for the security concerns with most countries now requiring Advanced Passenger Information this would surely help.

When I speak to people the visa situation or thought of a potential situation is offputting and some people do travel to other parts of the world with less complicated and/or expensive visa procedures. Last season there was a definite upsurge of Russian tourists, locals were concerned about russian girls and their motives for being in Goa, but the Russians I spoke were lovely families.

All in all though it just seems to unfair, we too have to travel or pray on the post to get our visas, I remember queing at 4am in the morning in Birmingham 3 seasons ago. Fortunately last time was much easier and although not same day, minimal hassle and quick queue times were a relief!

One of my friends last visited 10 years ago and then last season. Yes she said it had changed a lot but, this season she is going again - twice. She is a world traveller and has lived all over, so things can't be all bad. I guess it's what you want to make of it
