Guide to posting avatars

As Van appears to be quite busy at the moment, I have taken the liberty to post this guide. Follow these steps to put the Avatar you want on this website.

1. Find your Picture on the web. Please ensure that you can freely use the picture and ask for the necessary permission first from the owner.

2. Put your cursor on the picture and right click your mouse and select the option 'Save picture as'. Select a name and store the picture on your hard drive

3. Go to: http://www.imageshack.us

4. Press the 'browse' button

5. A pop-up window will appear. Find your picture and press the 'open' button

6. Press the 'host it!' button

7. After some processing time, you will get to the next page. In the 5th box down marked 'Direct link to picture' you will find a so called URL. Highlight this URL by keeping the left mouse button clicked and scrolling across it until it is fully highlighted. Right-click and select 'copy'. The link is now stored in the computer's memory

8. Go to the Holidaytruths page (make sure you are logged in) and select 'profile' from the top menu;

9. At the bottom of the profile, you find a box labelled 'link to offsite avatar'. Place the cursor in this box and simultaniously press the CTRL and V key.

10. Finally press the 'submit' button and your avatar should appear under your username.

Maybe a mod can make it a sticky for the moment?

To aid those on 56K connections, format is decrompressed so the quality is not that great

but it is visible

Lovely clear instructions thanks Mark. But are we allowed to do this without permission from Van or another moderator?

Hi Shorty,

I am sure that a Mod/Admin will confirm that providing you comply to the above instructions and that your avatar is no bigger than 90x90 pixles and not over 6KB, you can follow the procedure. Afterall, if you were not allowed to link to offsite Avatars, Van would have disabled the option when setting up these boards.

I did it, but I'm a bit worried it may be too big! How do I find out its size?

If you rightclick on your picture and select 'properties' you get all the information you need on it. Your picture is 121 x 106 pixels - slightly too big. The size is well under 6KB.

You can resize the picture yourself.

1 http://www.gifworks.com/image_editor.html

2 From the on screen menu (not top) select file/file open

3. From Method 2 click "Browse" and find the picture on your computer. Then select "Open" then press "Upload Image"

4. From the on screen menu (not top) select edit/resize-crop/resize;

5. In the width box overtype the figure to read "90"

6. Press the TAB key and you will see that the height figure is automatically adjusted.

7. Press the OK button

8. Rightclick on the resized image and select "Save Picture As" and store it on the computer.

9. Now go through steps 3 to 10 of the first post in this thread to host it through Imageshack and get it displayed here.

Job done.

Having done this for your Avatar, this is the correct size:

If you change it to: http://img138.exs.cx/img138/2049/160500default5ti.jpg all should be sorted.

Hi Mark

Being as you are being helpful about avatars thought you could help me.
I host my avatar on my web space (not through image shack) I have done for some time now with no problems.
But over the last few days after I post a reply my avatar disappears

and I get a cross. If I come out of that thread and go back in it reappears.
Any ideas???

It is giving a 404 error. It therefore appears that your image has been deleted (accidentally?) from your webspace.

Try FTP-ing it back and see what happens

Strange... I can see it now and the link is not giving a 404 anymore. Could be a problem with Blueyonder. Their server might be busy resulting in no connection being made with your pages.
