Hello again Emma
There's a list of the Glasgow markets on http://www.information-britain.co.uk
I suggest you have a look at the shopping arcades and centres in the city centre too. There's usually a lovely Christmas atmosphere. A couple of nice ones are at Buchanan Galleries and Princes Square (not the cheapest, but lovely for a look)...where there's not just shops, but lots of nice places to eat and drink too. There really are loads of shops and places to choose from and maybe even the odd bargain or two. Hope you enjoy it.
Thank you very much Fiona!!
Doea anybody know how far it is fro the Holiday Inn Glasgow Airport to the SECC?
Will you have a car? If so it wont take you long. The Holiday Inn at Glasgow Airport is right beside the motorway. (Dont worry, its got triple glazing. We stay there regularly.) Once on the motorway its about a 15 minute drive into Glasgow to the SECC. It's well signposted and has huge car parks.
I was there last year, round about this time of the year only for a night, when myself and my wife went to see Phil Collins at the SECC. He was the top man that night.
We travelled by coach from Leeds one Sunday morning, via the A64, A1, A66, M6, M74, M73 and the M8, heading back to Jorvikshire the following day.
The journey was actually quite enjoyable as, being a railwayman, I prefer to travel by train. As it was, there were no hold ups anywhere en route and the views, especially on the A66, M6 and M74 were splendid in the autumn sunshine.
Our overnight stay was in the Corus Hotel on West Argyle Street. Not a bad place to stay, quite comfortable as I recall, and the view from our window was looking down directly onto Argyle Street. Interesting. It was surprisingly quiet at night and there were no drunken Glaswegians doing the rounds.
Breakfast time was a bit of a shambles as there were about 30 of us stood about waiting for somewhere to sit so that we could eat. I think what had happened was that one of the breakfast rooms had been let for a company meeting and this had reduced capacity by an amount that the hotel management hadn't taken into consideration.
So, after about half an hour, we managed to get a reasonable "Scottish" breakfast. That set me up for the rest of the day.
There is a railway line that runs along the entire length of Argyle Street, underneath it, as all Glaswegians will probably tell you and I consider their public transport system to be pretty damn good.
That being the case, I would consider looking at the possiblities of using it to get from whichever hotel you might happen to be staying in to your intended destination within the city, be it the SECC or anywhere else.
If the system is NOT as good as I think it is, would one of you locals post a reply to correct me. I don't wish to heap praise on anything that doesn't deserve it!
Above all, I personally would trust SPT to get me around.
Go for it...
Thank you very much for your post!
The Holiday Inn as bridd has mentioned is about 15mins from the city centre, the only way to get there is by bus/car via the M8 or through Renfrew both of which can get very busy at peak periods.
If you can stay nearer the city centre I think that would probably be a better idea IMHO anyway.
StanMan is correct when he talks about the transport system, next door to the SECC there is a train station and the trains run every few minutes (approx 5-10) up to Central Station in the city centre at Argyle street , Buchanan St area and also then further up Argyle street.
There are some regular markets held in various location at Christmas time, usually near St Enoch square , bottom of Buchanan st on Argyle st and also there is a festive market and ice rink in George Square.
There are also usually many shops that appear through out the city with lots of bargains.

The one I saw was by St. Enoch underground station which had, I believe, a German theme.
It certainly did give a very festive atmosphere to the area and the smells and tastes were a delight.
I must go there again soon courtesy of a free return train ride thanks to my concessionary travel arrangements.
All the best to you Scots.
Gesundheit!
StanMan.
thank you very much to everyone who gave me a huge amount of information, that was really valuable to my planning,
Thanks guys
