Help we cant decide

My and my OH are looking at booking a holiday for 2012, I had set my heart on Cancun and went to book it yesterday only for the travel agent to tell me you cant leave the hotel complex after 7pm as it is to dangerous

We want to go somewhere with a bit of luxury as the kids have now gone,and we can afford that little bit more. we like lively resorts with lots of shops and things to do, but also on the evening we enjoy going for a stroll looking around the shops and going to nice restaurants. Can anyone give us a bit of advice as to what it is really like

In my opinion the TA has told you lies...................
Have been on the streets of Cancun on my own and felt as safe as here in Manchester. A lot of hotels are on there own complex and too far to walk into Cancun anyway.
If you want real luxury have a look at the Royal Cancun, adults only, no reservations needed for al a carte restaurants, walking distance to Coco Bongos and all the luxury shopping malls, waiter service on the beach and around the pool. Excellent.
