My girlfriend and i are looking at going to turkey june 20th.
Im a student and not got much money and she says that £300 worth of lira should be ok for 2 weeks
Has the price of things gone up alot since 2007?
yes prices have gone up and £300 for 2 wks isnt much money thats only just over £21 a day, is that for both of you or each, unless you either go all inclusive or eat out in very cheap places you might a struggle. you could always buy your own food and cook it that would save money on restaurants, also taking your own drinks to the beach in a cool bag saves loads we do that now, so that might be a possibility
Well thats each, ive also read if i get my lira over there i'll get more per £. is this true?
international brands of spirits are dear, beer is around 3-5 lira depending on what resort you are in, coke is usually around 2-4 lira a glass, not sure how much vodka is as i dont drink, im sure someone that drinks will be able to tell you
If you are going to have a 4 vodka's everynight thats most of £21 per day gone, if you don't drink much you might just about scrap by. £600 minium but I would say nearer £1000 if you are single and want to have a good time without worrying about money.
Is your £300 just for drinks or is it for food as well? If you drink local brands of vodka it will be cheaper and the measures are much bigger than we get here. Depending on where you are staying, if you have a fridge you could always get yoursef some vodka and coke from the supermarket to have before before you go out. It also depends where you actually drink, if it is a big music bar drinks are more exensive.
In the Marmaris / Icmeler region you will find prices competitive everywhere, eg, Breakfast £2, 3 to 5 course set meals £6.99, Oh and dont buy Vodka in Turkey as it is expensive buy it from Duty free on your flight or at your destination Airport, Shoparound and you will find very cheap bars and Restauraunts, Also food & Drinks are more expensive at your accomadation, Exchange your money only at a Bank for the best rate possible dont exchange it at Free commision shops as you get a far lower rate of return.
I agree with Rob buy a couple of litres of vodka on the plane it's normally 2 for £20. Although that may be one of your days money allocations out of the window but it could prove cost effective in the long run.
Change your money there not here.
Dont buy food to cook it is really expensive, unless you want very basic meal, meat cost the earth compared to here, veg abundant and cheap.
As already said take drinks and fruit to the beach rather than buying there, also fill up your fridge if you have one from the local super market as soft drinks costly, only drink local spirits ie dont ask for bacardi by name ask for local white rum just the same, same goes for Vodka, if you dont you will be charged through the nose for imported spirits
We stayed for 2 months last year and ended up eating in the locantas as it was cheaper, if you shop around you can find some good pide places, Turkish pitza but better than ours.
Best bet is try to take some more money if possible
Thank you everyone for your quick replys i think what i will do is take £300 with me and have £200 on a card just in case. Oh and this is just for me the girlfriend will be taking her own money plus she works so probably more.
I agree with Joan.pw try eating in local restaurants, not only is it a lot cheaper but the food is lovely. Your money will go a lot further that way.
personally i would try to get a bit more cash why not sell stuff on ebay thats what i do for spends
are you going sc fb hb or ai
All the above advise is spot on .Dont be tempted to buy your girlfriend loads of pressies ,if you do i think you will end up carrying a flask and sannies.
If you want to go out and about use the dolmuses, cheap and flexible. Go on local boat trips - you can get great ones for about £10 - £12 each all day including barbecue lunch. Its always very easy to get around in Turkey.
If you are self catering, you can buy bread, cheese, salad and fruit for lunch times and eat it on your balcony - or just cook some pasta easy and cheap. Have drinks from your fridge around the pool (depending on where you are staying, if you are permitted), and a few drinks before you go out for dinner, and you shouldn't spend too much.
It is more expensive in Turkey than a few years ago, but its still possible to have a reasonably cheap holiday.
I took £300 worth of lira to Marmaris last summer and I returned with nothing. That was for a week. We ate lunch in the apartment and sometimes breakfast too. We had dinner out every night. We didn't do trips as we just wanted to laze around the pool and beach etc. The drinks in Marmaris are expensive on the beach front or the marina. Im a vodka drinker but not in Marmaris! So much more expensive than back home for vodka, it was beer or cocktails out there. The nightlife is fantastic but its not cheap. We went out 4 nights out of the 7. I don't see how you could live for 2 wekks on £300 when I just managed it for a week and we were watching the pennies!
oh and club entry averages at 20 lira at the marina/bar street but the beach front is free (they aren't clubs though, more dance bars).
The pound has collapsed since then so I would imagine it will be worse this summer. I think its best to give people a realistic view of what it will cost for a fortnights SC for two.
i agree with greenshoes and chris, £21 a day is going to be a struggle, really depends on whether you eat and drink out much or try and do your own food, drinks can be fairly expensive, soft drinks can be the same or more than beer. if you go all inc you will be fine, or you will have to be extra frugal
To make your money go further,go on a few lazyday boat trips, you get breakfast, lunch and all your drinks for the day,for about £10 each.
is that 300 each or between you??? i would say that is not enough prices have gone up in general i havent been to turkey for 4 years but i work in traveland from people have said its not as cheap as what it was.
